Fatal Rollover Accident In Dodge County

A woman died in a Dodge County traffic crash Tuesday evening. Sheriff’s officials say her 2015 Toyota was heading north on the State Highway 26 off-ramp to eastbound travel of State Highway 16 when she failed to negotiate the curve. The car went off of the roadway and overturned multiple times. She died at the scene. She was the only occupant of the vehicle.  The accident in the Town of Emmet was reported at 5:19 pm.                       

Car Hits Train In Washington County

Washington County Sheriff’s officials say the driver of a speeding car was lucky to survive a collision with a freight train at the crossing of County Highway DW near Ohio Road in the Town of Addison Tuesday morning. A witness told investigators they were stopped at the crossing waiting for a Canadian National Railway train to pass when they saw a vehicle approaching them from the rear at a high rate of speed. To avoid hitting the witness’s vehicle the Town of Addison man driving the crash vehicle went into a ditch and hit one of the last cars of the northbound train. Investigators say there was dense fog, but the man was driving too fast for conditions and the railway warning lights and stop arm were working. The man was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

Blue Green Algae On Little Green Lake

The Green Lake County Health Department was notified Tuesday of the presence of what are likely blue-green algae blooms on Little Green Lake. As a result of the current water conditions, the Health Department has closed Soldiers and Sailors Beach until further notice. The water condition can change rapidly with blue-green algae blooms. The Health Department will provide updates when water conditions have returned to normal and the beach re-opens. Meanwhile avoid swallowing the lake water and do not touch algae scums. Keep pets away from the water and don’t let them drink the water.

Grandparent Scam Reported In Winnebago County

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is looking for the public’s help in identifying a car and its occupants. The occupants of the Subaru attempted to scam an elderly lady. They told her that her granddaughter was in custody after a vehicle crash in Texas and they tried to scam her out of $27,600, but negotiated that down to $10,000. They almost succeeded, but a family member of the woman interceded and took photos of the vehicle and its occupants. The Sheriff’s Office has posted the photos on their Facebook page. If you can identify the car and its occupants you are asked to call 920-236-7300 and ask for Deputy Burns. The car had no license plates on it.

Unemployment Rates Increase

Area counties saw their unemployment rates increase by at least a half of a percentage point in June. According to Federal Labor statistics Dodge County’s jobless rate was 3 percent, Fond du Lac County’s 3.1 percent, and Winnebago County’s was 3.2 percent. Waupaca County at the end of June saw its unemployment rate at 3.4 percent, Waushara County at 3.6 percent, and Green Lake County’s rate was 3.8 percent. The cities of Fond du Lac and Oshkosh’s jobless rate also topped 3 percent at 3.3 and 3.6 percent respectively. The rates were still lower than a year ago in June.

Deer Hunting In Wautoma

Deer hunters in the city of Wautoma can hunt closer to home during the archery season. The city of Wautoma is opening 116 acres to archery deer hunting. Hunters will be drawn from a lottery. Application packets and regulations are available at the Wautoma Police Department. The application deadline is August 31st.  According to the state’s Department of Natural Resources the Archery and Crossbow seasons begin September 17th and run through January 8th but no bucks may be harvested during antlerless only seasons during certain weeks in December.

Addressing Mental Health Needs

The supervisor for Ripon Community Hospital’s Outpatient Behavioral Health Department says she’s proud they are able to provide so many points of access for mental health care needs. Laurie Rechek of SSM Health says there has been a significant need in our area for critical mental health and substance abuse services. She says they’ve been able to address those needs and causes of standard stress as well.  Rechek says to access their service people can go to the emergency room at Ripon Community Hospital, contact their primary care physician or call SSM Health’s Outpatient Behavioral Health Department at 920-926-4200.

Boys & Girls Club Summer Program In Ripon A Hit

The program the Boys & Girls Club of the Tri-County Area has been running in conjunction with Ripon College this summer has been successful. Ashley Bartol of the Club says it picked up where summer school left off allowing kids to learn and just have some fun experiences. She says they partnered with the educations department to staff it so kids received college credit. She says families enjoyed it and they had a waiting list. Bartol notes in addition to educational opportunities, there were field trips and they had a chance to visit the police department and with the fire department. She believes they will offer the same opportunity next summer while the Club’s new facility is being built on the site of the former Republican House in Ripon.

Stepsisters Set The Record Straight

The premise for the musical comedy “Stepsisters” that the Ripon Area Community Theatre will perform this weekend is that the Grimm’ Brothers got the “Cinderella” story wrong. It tells the tale from the stepsisters’ point of view. The production features a cast and crew of 27 children and adults ranging in age from 11 to 70.  Performances will be Friday and Saturday night at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm at the Ripon High School Auditorium. Sophie Walheim plays the wicked stepmother and she says her character is about feminism and making sure her daughters marry well. Tickets are $10 each. The Ripon Noon Kiwanis are patrons of the theater program and will be holding 50/50 and advance sale raffles to benefit the program. The drawing for the advance sale raffle tickets will be after Sunday’s performance with cash prizes for first through fourth place. Stepsisters’ co-director Linda Dejager says the best way to show your support is to buy tickets and attend this performance and upcoming performances.
