Michels Wins GOP Primary For Governor

Wisconsin businessman Tim Michels won the Republican Primary for Governor Tuesday. Michels got 47 percent of the GOP vote defeating former Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch who received 42 percent. State Representative Timothy Ramthun was a distant third with 6 percent of the vote. Michels will face incumbent Democratic Governor Tony Evers in November. Meanwhile Roger Roth got 30 percent of the vote for Lieutenant Governor to finish ahead of seven other Republican opponents in that primary. Sara Rodriguez received 76 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor to defeat opponent Peng Her.

Attorney General Very Close

Eric Toney

Both leading vote getters in the Republican Primary for State Attorney General received 37 percent of the vote in the race. But Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney finished with about 3,500 more popular votes (223,180 to 219,720) than former State Senator Adam Jarchow. Karen Mueller got 26 percent of the vote. Jarchow conceded the race to Toney who will face incumbent Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul in November.

Longtime Democratic Secretary of State Doug La Follette got 64 percent of the vote in his primary and will face Republican winner Amy Loudenbeck who received 46 percent of the vote in her race.

In the State Treasurer races John Leiber got 66 percent of the vote in the Republican primary. The Democratic primary was much closer with Aaron Richardson getting 38 percent of the vote and Gillian Battino 36 percent.

U.S. Senate And Congressional Races

Ron Johnson

Lieutenant Governor Mandella Barnes will face incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson in the November General Election. Both were easy winners over their opponents in yesterday’s primary election. Most of Barnes opposition in the Democratic primary had dropped out of the race. He received 78 percent of the vote. Meanwhile Johnson easily defeated David Schroeder getting 84 percent of the vote.

Incumbent Republican Congressmen Glenn Grothman and Mike Gallagher won their primaries in the 6th and 8th Congressional Districts respectively. Grothman easily outdistanced Menasha health care consultant Douglas Mullenix receiving 82 percent of the vote, while Gallagher got 85 percent of the vote in his race against Shaun Clarmont. Grothman faces no opposition in the November election.  

Incumbent Sheriff’s Survive Primaries

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt

A couple of area sheriff’s faced opposition in their Republican primaries Tuesday. Barring a write-in campaign in November Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt could be serving another four year term. Schmidt received 75 percent of the vote to challenger Mark Colker’s 24 percent.  Meanwhile Waupaca County Sheriff Timothy Wilz survived a challenge from Sheriff’s Sergeant Cameron Durrant. Wilz got 59 percent of the vote and faces no announced opposition in November.

In the Republican primary election for State Senate District 19 the winner was Rachael Cabral Guevara who received 64 percent of the vote to defeat Andrew Thomsen. She will face Democrat Kristin Alfheim in the General Election.

The Republican primary race for State Assembly District 6 was close with Peter Schmidt getting 30 percent of the vote in a field of six candidates. His Democratic opponent in November will be William Switalla
