Fiery Crash In Calumet County
A 42-year-old New Holstein man was critically injured when the vehicle he was in rolled over in a field in Calumet County early Monday morning and started on fire. Sheriff’s officials say it happened on County Highway A north of Foundry Road in the Town of New Holstein. The man was trapped inside but police, fire and EMS units were able to get him out of the vehicle. Lifesaving efforts were performed and he was flown to a trauma center where he was in critical, but stable condition. The 33-year-old Sheboygan woman who was driving the vehicle was arrested for causing injury while operating under the influence. Besides alcohol, speed was believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.
Next Mass Shooter Seeking Insanity Defense
The 53-year-old Oshkosh man who told a former neighbor he was going to be the “next mass shooter” will be pursuing an insanity plea in the federal court case against him. A federal grand jury last month indicted Whittier Ives on a felon in possession of a firearm charge. Ives former neighbor told Omro police Ives had come over to pick up some things he had been storing for him. That included a green duffle bag and shoe box that acquaintance knew Ives had a rifle and magazines in. That is also when Ives allegedly made a threat about shooting people at a club in Appleton. During a traffic stop on Ives truck police recovered a partially assembled AR-15 assault rifle, 600 rounds of ammo, and miscellaneous handgun ammo. Tuesday a judge ordered a psychiatric exam related to Ives insanity plea. More hearings will be scheduled after that report is returned.
Green Lake County Highway EF Project Update
Green Lake County Highway Commissioner Derek Mashuda says paving on the County Highway EF wrapped up on the mainline and intersections Monday. The highway department crews Tuesday began grading driveways so residents can get in and out until the paving is completed. Caution should be used entering your driveway. Once the grading is complete the asphalt pavers will be directly behind tying in all the asphalt and concrete driveways and finishing intersections. Paint striping of the new pavement will take place today. The remainder of driveway culverts will be installed tomorrow. Starting next week the highway department will be hauling fill material to fix the steep slopes and ditch lines throughout the project. Flagging will continue through this process and small delays are to be expected.
Blue Green Algae Testing At Dodge Memorial County Park Inconclusive
Green Lake County’s Public Health Department says routine testing by the Green Lake Association at Dodge Memorial County Park was inconclusive for the presence of Blue Green algae Tuesday morning. The Association was unable to determine the status of the water quality at Dodge Memorial County Park. Water samples are being sent to the Wisconsin State Hygiene Lab, but it will take some time before results are known. The Association says water at the park is slightly more green than usual with a lot of dead vegetation washed up on shore. It does not appear to be a typical Blue Green algae bloom. The Health Department urges swimmers to use common sense when swimming, monitor water quality and “when in doubt, stay out. If you can’t see your feet in knee-dee water because its green and opaque, if the water is any other unusual color, or if it has floating scums, stay out. Young children and pets should be kept out of the water in these conditions.
Speed Awareness Day
Dodge and Columbia County Sheriff’s Offices are joining law enforcement officers from six states including Wisconsin today in this year’s high visibility Speed Awareness Day enforcement campaign. The campaign is an effort to address the drastic increase in speed and hazardous moving violations that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speeding is involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities nationwide. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says statistical projections for 2021 shows traffic deaths grew by 10.5 percent. In 2020 there were 5,413 fatal injuries in the six-state region with 1,668 or 30.8 percent of them being speed related. Fatal traffic accidents due to speed are higher in the summer months.
Ripon Common Council Approves Agreement With MSA
The Ripon Common Council Monday night unanimously approved an agreement with MSA for a development plan for the removal of the Tygert Street Bridge and engineering services that goes with that. That would also include Silver Creek revetment or shoring up and hydraulic analysis of the creek as well. The lump sum for those services would be for nearly $46,000. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says the bridge, which is quite old, failed a month to a month and a half ago and is no longer safe. The engineering service would have to be complete by February of next year and would be the basis for any permits or permissions needed from the DNR. A bridge construction estimate will be included in MSA’s services for the design and construction of a future pedestrian bridge over Silver Creek. The estimate will include estimated construction and design costs for two alternative pedestrian bridge types.
Mercury And Alliant Team Up Solar Project
Mercury Marine and Alliant Energy are partnering to build a 5-megawatt, 32-acre solar array in eastern Fond du Lac County to advance the company’s sustainability initiatives and the region’s growing commitment to renewable energy. The Ledgeview Solar Project, pending reviews and approval by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin in the coming months, is the first to be developed under Alliant Energy’s Renewable Energy Partner program. The project will offset 10 percent of the electricity Mercury uses on its Fond du Lac campus. The project will include more than 12,000 solar panels generating enough electricity to power approximately 1,300 homes annually.
Ag Ambassador Program
The COVID-19 pandemic slowed down Envision Greater Fond du Lac’s Ag Ambassador program for two years, but it was back on track this past school year. Amy Ries is the Director of Agricultural programs for Envision. She says they got out to schools across Fond du Lac County and taught 7,000 kids about the importance of agriculture in the county. Events like Day on the Farm, June Dairy Days, Breakfast on the Farm, and last week’s County Fair all help to promote agriculture. Ries says they will be sending out letters in September to schools asking them if they would like someone from their Ag Ambassador program to do a program for students. She says it’s a free program and they visit schools twice, once in the fall and once in the spring.
