Racine Man Charged For FDL County Chase And Drug Possession

Bond has been set at $250,000 cash for a 28-year-old Racine man who led authorities on a 14-mile chase on Interstate 41 through Fond du Lac County late last Tuesday night. The chase began in Winnebago County went south on Interstate 41 and ended after Jarvis Starks crashed the vehicle he was driving near Quad Graphics in Lomira. He was found hiding in some tall grass. Seized during the incident were a loaded handgun, digital scale, 2,500 counterfeit oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl and 3 bags of suspected cocaine weighing 84 grams. Starks is charged with possession of fentanyl and cocaine, first degree recklessly endangering safety, two counts of felony eluding, resisting or obstructing an officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia. All six charges carry an enhancer for use of a dangerous weapon. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 4th.

One To One Program Approved

The Fond du Lac County Board last week unanimously approved spending $1.8 million of the American Rescue Plan Act Funds the county received for the implementation of a one-to-one Sheriff’s Office squad car program. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt told the board that will buy 25 cars and equipment needed for them. He says it’s impractical for instance for a deputy living in Ripon to travel to Fond du Lac to get a squad car when there is a SWAT call in Rosendale that requires all hands on deck. He says they’ve all had experiences where they are using their own personal car to respond to an incident or snow event where minutes could mean lives. Waldschmidt says they have just over 100 special team responses a year. He also says having a squad car parked at a deputy’s home is a deterrent to crime.  He believes the one-to-one program will also help them as a recruitment tool because that is something prospective deputes ask about.

Sex Offender Will Live In Oshkosh

A 70-year-old sex offender is being released from a supervised living facility Wednesday and will be living in Oshkosh. Gerald Schneider will be homeless but will be on GPS monitoring. Schneider was convicted in Winnebago County of having sex with a child in 1976 and of three counts of first degree sexual assault of a child in 1993. The victims were two 8-year-old girls, a 12-year-old girl, and 15-year-old girl. In November of 2007 he was found to be a sexually violent person, but last week a discharge was issued for that order.

OWI Suspect Waives FDL County Preliminary Hearing

A 30-year-old Appleton man waived his preliminary hearing in Fond du Lac County court last Friday on OWI and narcotics possession charges. Michael Marx also pled not guilty to those charges and a count of operating while revoked when he was subsequently arraigned. He was arrested on May 1st for his fourth operating while under the influence offense after his vehicle went off of I-41 southbound south of Highway 151. A State Patrol trooper and sergeant stopped at the scene. Marx was arrested after field sobriety testing and a drug evaluation. Drugs and drug paraphernalia were also found at the scene. He will be back in court for a status hearing in the case on September 6th.

Deadline To Apply For Drawing For Upriver Sturgeon Spearing License

The state’s Department of Natural Resources reminds sturgeon spearers that the deadline to apply for an Upriver Lakes sturgeon spearing tag is August 1st. Due to a higher success rate on the Upriver Lakes, only 500 license holders will be selected to spear a sturgeon from lakes Poygan, Winneconne or Butte des Morts during the 2023 sturgeon spearing season from the Upriver Lakes. Spearing licenses are then issued through a drawing where priority is granted to applications with the most preference points. Those not selected earn a preference point for future drawings. Applicants will be notified of whether they received the authorization to purchase an Upriver Lakes sturgeon spearing license by October 1st.

Alice In The Area

Alice in Dairyland Taylor Schaefer at Widmer’s Cheese Cellars in Theresa

Wisconsin’s 75th Alice in Dairyland Taylor Schaefer made a few stops in the area last Thursday. She stopped at Widmer’s Cheese Cellars in Theresa and Kelley Country Cremery in Fond du Lac. She says stopping at Widmer’s was an impulse but with the business celebrating its 100th anniversary this year she was happy to be there as the state’s agricultural ambassador. She sampled their cheese curds and learned the business is celebrating its history by displaying photos on their social media from over the years. Schaefer found a photo from 1976 when Wisconsin’s 29th Alice in Dairyland Janice (Findlay) Aiken from Burlington visited Widmer’s.  Schaefer posted that photo on the Alice Facebook page.

Ripon Senior Activity Center Fundraiser

The Ripon Senior Activity Center has a pretty good deal for those who like sub sandwiches and pizzas. As a fundraiser they are selling coupons to purchase subs and pizzas made and sold at Webster’s Marketplace in Ripon. Center Executive Director Noreen Johnson says the coupons are only $5 and they will get you a 12-inch sub or 12-inch thin crust pizza, both of which usually go for $8.99. The coupons are good until next January 31st so you have about six months to redeem them or pick up more at the Center weekdays from 10 am to 2 pm. Money generated by the sale of the coupons will help defray costs for trips put on by the Center and other activities.
