Slow Down And Give Emergency Workers Room

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says a driver should have been able to safely pass an Eldorado Fire Truck working at the scene of an accident on Interstate 41 last Saturday night. But the driver was impaired and struck the back of the fire truck. Fortunately firefighters were working the scene and none were hit by the vehicle. To make his point on Facebook Waldschmidt posted dashcam video from the scene showing other vehicles safely passing law enforcement and emergency vehicles.  Forty-nine-year-old Thomas Gonzalez of Brookfield has been charged with 2nd degree recklessly endangering safety and three traffic violations including OWI 1st for hitting the fire truck. He’s been released on a $2,500 signature bond and has a preliminary hearing on September 8th. Waldschmidt urges drivers to slow down and give emergency workers plenty of room at such scenes.    (Fond du Lac County Jail photo of Thomas Gonzalez)

Crime Stoppers Tips Are Important

Green Lake County Sheriff’s photo.

Green Lake County Chief Deputy Sheriff Matt Vande Kolk says they’ve been fortunate over the years to get good tips for their Crime Stoppers program. Crimes like a recent theft and a burglary resulted in video surveillance photos shared through the program to generate tips. Vande Kolk says if you do see something that seems suspicious report it because what you might not think is important could lead to solving a crime. He says they have had a very strong relationship with their communities and it is not something they take lightly. He says when it comes to tips for the program, “help us help you.” Tips can be reported anonymously to the Green Lake County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-438-8436 or text GETTHEM at 847411.

Littering Cause For Concern

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office Law of the Month for July focuses on the problem of littering. The office has received a lot of complaints about littering throughout the county. Officials say while it is a year-round problem in recent weeks there have been instances of people dumping mattresses, animal carcasses and other types of garbage into ditches and on private property. Littering violates both state statute and a Dodge County ordinance. It is also pointed out that no one likes driving down a road and seeing trash along the shoulder, and no one appreciates people throwing trash on their property. Deputies will be patrolling and citing violators. The fine for littering is $200.50. Those who have information about someone littering can call the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 920-386-3726.

Fireworks Reminder

A couple of area communities that had to postpone their fireworks displays on the Fourth of July due to weather concerns will have them tomorrow night. For Ripon the event will take place at Barlow Park in conjunction with Riponfest. The fireworks will be launched at dusk from Barlow Park which is located on Ripon’s south side near the intersection of Griswold and Watson Street. In Green Lake the fireworks will also be at dusk Saturday at Deacon Mills Park where there will be live music starting at 5:30 pm. Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Meier says to be sure to bring your lawn chair, blanket, or come by boat, to view the spectacular display over the waters of Big Green Lake.

FDL County Health Department Accreditation Was A Long Process

Last Month the Public Health Accreditation Board announced that the Fond du Lac County Health Department had achieved accreditation status. County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says they’ve been working on accreditation for a good decade, but that there are a lot of pieces that go into it. She says to operate as a health department they have to meet certain state standards, but the standards for national accreditation are much higher. She says in order to provide the best quality care for county residents meeting the national standards for accreditation brings them to the next level. The accreditation is good for five years but the health department has to maintain what they have in place each year.

Envision Waupun Chamber Partnership

A partnership between Envision Greater Fond du Lac and the Waupun Area Chamber of Commerce will benefit both organizations and members of both chambers. Envision President and CEO Sadie Vander Velder says Envision is able to provide the Waupun Chamber with services they can’t offer because of the size of their staff. That includes offering a lot of technical assistance, access to a revolving loan fund, sharing information about how to write a business plan or go through an expansion. Vander Velde says one of the benefits for Envision is sharing office space with the Waupun Chamber at 321 East Main Street in Waupun. She says that gives them a place they can work out of when they are visiting with businesses in Waupun and helps the Waupun Chamber with some of its staffing issues.  The Waupun Chamber Office is staffed Tuesdays from 8 am to noon and Thursdays from 1 to 5 pm. Additional times can be made available for appointments and special projects.

The Market at Town Square will start a little later starting Friday, July 15th. The popular farmers and artisan market is held in the heart of Green Lake on the Town Square lawn and will be from 4 to 7 pm starting next Friday. Town Square Executive Director Kris Anderson says, “With the longer summer days and weekend visitors, people can stop at the market after work or on their way into town get fresh produce, flowers and some food for the weekend.” She adds it is a nice place to stroll and shop for locally made items from wonderful artisans. There will be occasional live music at the market as well as children’s activities.
