The Oreo Complex
A visiting professor of theatre for Ripon College will be putting on a solo performance Friday night about what her experiences are like navigating predominately white institutions as a black woman. “The Oreo Complex” refers to a black person who inadvertently takes on the characteristics of white culture because of their exposure to it. Lillian Brown says it is tough to maintain your own black culture while going through a white educational system. At the same time people see her as being black first. Her goal is to be seen as authentically human instead of as a stereotype. The performance is at 7 pm Friday night at The Heist in downtown Ripon. Tickets are $10 and are available through Eventbrite. Brown says she will also be performing the piece in Washington, D.C. and St. Louis.
