6/29/22 Ripon Housing Study

29 June 2022 News

The Ripon Common Council Monday night spent much of its meeting reviewing the results of a Housing Needs Assessment and Market Analysis. Mark Steward of Vierbicher Associates of Reedsburg went over the highlights of the 58 page report. He told the Council there is a need for single and multi-family housing. The city currently has 112 vacant residential lots. Steward said the city’s population of adults 65 and older is above the state average while the median household income is below the state average. Among the recommendations in the report was encouraging the development of workforce housing and 4 to 16-unit apartment complexes and encouraging developers to build in the city. He said with the price of lumber and other building materials coming down it is more affordable to build. City Administrator Adam Sonntag said the city does have tools such as the Build Ripon and Renew Ripon programs. In addition they will explore a First Time Home Buyer incentive program and do a comprehensive review of the zoning code so the city is more flexible with its regulations. Last November the city approved a contract with Vierbicher to do the study.
