Corbin Burnes bounced back from his two shortest outings of the season, Willy Adames got two of his three hits in a seven-run fifth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers routed the New York Mets 10-2 on Wednesday night for their second win in 11 games.
Milwaukee’s big night gave manager Craig Counsell his 564th victory with the Brewers, breaking the franchise record. Counsell, the longest-tenured manager in the National League, passed Phil Garner, who managed 1,180 games for the team from 1992-99. Counsell is 564-508 since taking over for Ron Roenicke on May 4, 2015, and the Wisconsin native is the third-longest tenured manager in the majors behind Cleveland’s Terry Francona and Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash.
Counsell was showered with beer by his players and conducted his postgame interview with his hair still soaked. He also got a gift from Brewers owner Mark Attanasio along with video messages from retired Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, Milwaukee Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer and Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr.
Burnes entered with a 6.75 ERA over his previous two outings and had allowed eight runs in eight innings in losses to San Diego and Philadelphia. But the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner was in control throughout. He yielded five hits, including Jeff McNeil’s homer in the fourth and RBI single in the sixth.
Burnes fanned Francisco Lindor twice and retired NL RBI leader Pete Alonso all three times, getting the slugger on a pair of foul popups before striking him out in the sixth.
Milwaukee scored twice in the first, its first opening inning with multiple runs since May 26 at St. Louis. Then the Brewers poured it on in the fifth against David Peterson (3-1) and relievers Jake Reed and Trevor Williams.
Adames doubled in the first and scored on a two-run single by Luis Urías. Adames later started Milwaukee’s biggest inning of the season with a single and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Victor Caratini after advancing to second on an errant pickoff toss by Reed. The slumping Adames also hit a two-run single to give the Brewers a 9-1 lead. In between his two hits in the fifth, Lorenzo Cain hit a run-scoring infield single and pinch-hitter Jace Peterson had a two-run double. Andrew McCutchen capped the big inning with an RBI single. Adames had his second three-hit game of the season. He entered 3 for 24 since returning last week from a sprained left ankle.
Brewers LHP Josh Hader was placed on the paternity list and is expected to miss the next three days. RHP Brandon Woodruff, experiencing numbness in his three middle fingers due to Raynaud’s syndrome, said he felt good after throwing only fastballs during a bullpen session Tuesday. Counsell said Woodruff is expected to begin a rehab assignment Saturday. RHP Freddy Peralta (right lat strain) has begun throwing and RHP Trevor Gott (strained right groin) is playing catch and inching closer to throwing off a mound.
The Brewers close out their series with the Mets tonight. Left-hander Aaron Ashby (1-5, 3.91 ERA goes for Milwaukee against right-hander Tylor Megill (4-2, 4.50 ERA). First pitch is at 6:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Diamondbacks beat the Reds 7-4, Pittsburgh downed St. Louis 6-4 and the Padres pounded the Cubs 19-5. The Brewers trail the Cardinals by one game in the division.
The Atlanta Braves won their 14th straight game last night, an 8-2 victory at Washington over the Nationals.
In the Midwest League Wednesday night, Great Lakes won at home over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-0. The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:05.
The series finale between the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders and the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Wednesday night was postponed due to severe weather and rain throughout the evening. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday, July 10 starting at 1:05 p.m.
In the State Baseball Tournament Semifinals Division 4 play on Wednesday, Regis beat Oakfield 14-4 at Fox Cities Stadium. In the Division 1 Finals today, Milton faces Bayport
The NBA Finals continue tonight in Boston with Golden State leading the Celtics 3-2. The Warriors will be going for their seventh title and fourth in the last seven years.
The Stanley Cup finals began last night in Colorado and the Avalanche edged Tampa Bay 4-3. Game two is Saturday night in Colorado.
Tickets will go on sale in two weeks for the Packers Family Night scrimmage, scheduled for Friday, August 5. It’s the 21st year of the Family Night event, which gives the Packers offense and defense a full practice in front of a capacity crowd at Lambeau Field to prepare for the upcoming season. The gates will open at 5:30 P.M. Players will start warm-ups on the field at 7 P.M., and the scrimmage starts half an hour later. The Packers promise a family-focused game-like atmosphere with giveaways, music, and a fireworks show to cap off the event.
Tickets are only sold online through Ticketmaster.com starting at 10 A.M. on Wednesday, June 29. They’ll cost $10 each, regardless of the age of the person it’s for. There’s a limit of 10 tickets per purchase that day. These are not paper tickets but will be mobile-only. Groups of 50 or more can get tickets by filling out an application at https://pckrs.com/fn2022, in person at the Packers ticket office, or by calling (920) 569-7501. Resale is prohibited. Parking at the stadium will cost $5. Net proceeds will go to Meijer Simply Give’s mission to support hunger relief.
Congratulations to Bri Handel and Ava Stahl of the Wautoma Hornets for their All-State honors in softball. Bri earned 1st team pitcher this year and Ava was second team as an infielder. Bri leaves the program as a 3 time all-state athlete.
Basketball is coming to the state’s largest baseball stadium. Both the Wisconsin Badgers’ men’s and women’s basketball teams are heading to American Family Field in Milwaukee for the Brew City Battle The Nov. 11 doubleheader will see the men take on Stanford and the women show down against Kansas State. It will be the first time the Milwaukee Brewers’ stadium will host a college basketball game.
The basketball court will be positioned across the infield, with center court near the pitcher’s mound. Temporary seats will be set up just beyond second base, and there will be field-level seating around the court. Nearly all of the stadium’s existing seating areas will also be available.
