Aerial Patrols

The Wisconsin State Patrol pilots are scheduled to keep an eye out for traffic violations from the air this week and weekend. Weather permitting the State Patrol’s Air Support Unit will patrol Interstate 41 in Dodge County today and Interstate 39 in Waushara County on Saturday. Aerial enforcement is one way to enhance public safety efforts. From the air it’s much easier to spot drivers who are speeding or driving aggressively. When a pilot observes a violation, they communicate with ground-based units to initiate a traffic stop.

Alliant Energy Gets Approval For Three Solar Energy Projects

Alliant Energy this week got final approval from state regulators to go ahead with the second-phase of development plans for three solar energy projects in the area. Construction is set to start for a 99-megawatt solar project in the Waushara County town of Dakota and City of Wautoma that would generate enough electricity to power nearly 26,000 homes. Construction is also poised to move forward on the Beaver Dam and Springfield solar projects in Dodge County.  The 50-megawatt Beaver Dam solar project would generate electricity for 13,000 homes and the 100-megawatt Springfield project in the town of Lomira enough electricity for 26,000 homes. Construction would create more than 100 jobs at each project.

COVID 19 Update

Wisconsin’s new COVID-19 case count went up slightly Wednesday with 1,694 cases identified through testing. The 7-day rolling average for new cases still slipped a bit to 1,471 new cases a day. The positivity rate for testing is now at 11.7 percent. Eight deaths were reported and 42 people were hospitalized. The Wisconsin Hospital Association yesterday reported 358 COVID-19 patients in hospitals across the state with 58 of them in intensive care units. Both of those numbers are down slightly.

Winnebago County reported 40 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday. Thirty (30) new cases were recorded in Fond du Lac County and Dodge County had 18 new cases. Green Lake County had 3 new cases, Waupaca County had 11 new cases, and Waushara County had 5 new cases of the coronavirus.

COVID Dashboard Updated

The Fond du Lac County Health Department this week changed the information on the COVID-19 Dashboard it has been using to keep the public updated. Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says they will no longer be posting daily numbers for new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. She says they will be going to a weekly update with averages per 100,000 people for the past 7 days. The Dashboard will be updated every Friday morning. She says the information for COVID hospitalizations will give a percentage of the beds in the two hospitals in the county they are being used for COVID patients and a percentage of total admissions. The Dashboard also gives the current community level of COVID-19 through information supplied by the CDC.

Feminine Products Drive

Three United Way chapters in the area are combining on a feminine products drive next week. The Ripon Area United Way, Fond du Lac Area United Way, United Way of Dodge County, and Fond du Lac Area Women’s Fund are partnering on the drive that starts Sunday and runs through the following Sunday. Fond du Lac Area United Way Executive Director Amber Kilawee says a board member who is also a school nurse brought up the need for girls in school who might be caught off guard by their monthly period. She says they piloted the effort in Fond du Lac last year and it was a success so they are expanding it to schools throughout the county. In Ripon there will be collection boxes for pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and panty liners at Webster’s, Ripon Drug, and Walgreen’s. You can also find a list at FDL United Way.org or give a cash donation by texting “TIME” to 26989.

Praise For Response To Waupun Gas Leak

Waupun Mayor Rohn Bishop says everyone involved in handling the response to a gas leak in the city last Friday afternoon acted quickly and professionally. He says that includes the police and fire departments that responded after a piece of construction equipment struck a gas main in the area of South Madison and Doty Streets. About 20 homes had to be evacuated and power was shut off for about 350 customers. Bishop says City Administrator Kathy Schlieve had the Senior Center open for people who might need temporary shelter. He also credits the Waupun Utility and Alliant Energy. Bishop says thankfully no one was injured and although some people were inconvenienced for a few hours it ended without incident.

OASD Food Truck

The Oshkosh Area School District is introducing a food truck focused on hands-on learning for students of all abilities-the first of its kind in the nation. Named Brewing Futures Mobile CAFÉ (Coaching Ability For Employment), the customized and fully accessible food truck will soon make its way to community events and businesses. It will be operated by District students receiving special education services. The idea for the food truck came from the District’s successful high school cafes-the Wildcat Café at Oshkosh West and the Spartan Snack Shack at Oshkosh North. The in-school cafes provide on-the-job training for over 50 students per year in various skills.  The food truck arrived in the District this week and it is being equipped and inspected.
