The Brewers managed just three hits Tuesday in a 4-0 loss to the Mets in New York. The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on four hits and Chris Bassett pitched eight shutout innings, including striking out four of the last five Brewers he faced. On the night he struck out seven and walked one. Milwaukee lost its ninth game in its last ten outings. New York collected eight hits and all were off starting pitcher Adrian Houser (3-7), who allowed all four runs while striking out three and walking one. Pete Alonso went 2-3 and drove in the two runs for the Mets. The teams meet again tonight as Milwaukee sends right hander Corbin Burnes (3-4, 2.48 ERA) against left hander David Peterson (3-0, 3.44 ERA). First pitch is at 6:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Cardinals won a doubleheader from the Pirates, 3-1 and 9-1, the Padres pounded the Cubs 12-5 and Reds over the Diamondbacks 5-3. The Brewers are now 2 ½ games behind St. Louis in the division.
Meanwhile, Atlanta didn’t miss a beat in extending its MLB-best 13-game win streak, hitting five more homers en route to a decisive 10-4 victory over Washington at Nationals Park. The Braves’ 13-game streak is the longest in the Majors this season, the club’s longest since the 2013 team reeled off 14 in a row and tied for the third longest in the franchise’s modern era (since 1900). The 2000 Braves won 15 straight to set the franchise’s modern era record.
The Packers wrap up offseason workouts this week with their final week of OTAs. It’s the team’s last chance at work before training camp begins July 27th. Receiver Allen Lazard was not present on Tuesday, a day after signing his restricted free agent tender contract. He has not participated in any of the team’s offseason workouts.
There were 29 players visibly absent from Tuesday’s voluntary practice, however linebacker Rashan Gary was one of the few established players back in Green Bay this week. He said he’s in camp to make not only himself better and the team overall, but to also help the younger players improve. Gary said there have been many players that have helped him along the way, like Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith, so now it’s his turn to pay it forward.
In the Midwest League Tuesday night, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won on the road against Great Lakes, 8-6. James Meeker picked up the win to improve to 4-2 while Cam Robinson notched his 14th save. Wisconsin jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning. The Loons picked up another run in the second but then the T-Rates scored three in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Great Lakes tied the game with four runs in the sixth but Wisconsin scored two in the top of the ninth and then held on for the win. Tyler Black drove in three runs for the T-Rats and Wes Clarke drove in two. The teams meet again tonight with the first pitch set for 6:05.
The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters tallied a season-high 17 runs and 23 hits as the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders fell at Herr-Baker Field, 17-2.
The loss was the fifth in a row for the Dock Spiders, while the Rafters tied their franchise record with their 14th straight win. The Rafters continue to stay at the top of the Great Lakes West Division, while the Dock Spiders fall to 8-7 on the year, six games behind Wisconsin Rapids.
The Rafters tallied a run in seven of their nine innings at the plate, including seven early runs to take a 7-0 lead through an inning and a half. The Dock Spiders would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run from Cole Messina (South Carolina) that travelled 410 feet to center, and an RBI groundout from Cash Rugely (Kansas State).
Over the final five innings, the Rafters scored 12 runs, including multiple in the fifth, seventh and ninth inning.
Dock Spiders pitching tallied 11 strikeouts on the night.
The Dock Spiders will conclude their two-game set with the Rafters tonight at Herr-Baker Field. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m., with David Hagaman (West Virginia) Herr-Baker Field getting the start for Fond du Lac after he struck out eight over five innings last Thursday against Green Bay.
Bay Port may have been the D1 runner-up in baseball last year, but they’re considered the underdogs this season as the No. 8 seed at the WIAA state tournament.The Pirates came out hot Tuesday upsetting the No. 1 seed Sun Prairie 4-2 in the state quarterfinal.
Later that night in the semifinals, they beat Menomonee Falls 4-3, advancing to the D1 state championship for the second straight year.
Basketball is coming to the state’s largest baseball stadium. Both the Wisconsin Badgers’ men’s and women’s basketball teams are heading to American Family Field in Milwaukee for the Brew City Battle. The Nov. 11 doubleheader will see the men take on Stanford and the women show down against Kansas State.
It will be the first time the Milwaukee Brewers’ stadium will host a college basketball game.
The basketball court will be positioned across the infield, with center court near the pitcher’s mound. Temporary seats will be set up just beyond second base, and there will be field-level seating around the court. Nearly all of the stadium’s existing seating areas will also be available.
