Gerritson Appointed FDL Fire Chief

Fond du Lac Chief Erick Gerritson

The Fond du Lac Police and Fire Commission Tuesday approved the appointment of interim Fire Chief Erick Gerritson as the city’s Fire Chief. The PFC conducted an interview with Gerritson yesterday and invited the Fire Chiefs of Oshkosh, West Bend and Sheboygan to sit in on the interview and provide their expertise and experience. Those chiefs agreed Gerritson is ready and fully prepared to accept the role of Fire Chief of Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue.  Nine candidates from throughout the U.S. and Canada had applied for the position.  Gerritson was the lone finalist. Fire Chief Peter O’Leary retired in April after 13 years with the city and more than 40 years in the fire service. Gerritson became Interim Fire Chief on April 14th, the day after O’Leary’s retirement became effective.

Watch Out For Heat Exhaustion

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it is important to get out of the sun if you aren’t feeling well. She says with temperatures in the 90s and feels-like temperatures 100 or better there are some symptoms that you will experience if you are suffering from heat exhaustion.  They include; clammy skin, feeling dizzy, headaches, muscle cramps, extreme thirst, excessive sweating, fainting, nausea, vomiting and decreased urine output. Those at more risk of heat exhaustion include those drinking alcohol, kids 5 and under, the elderly, the obese, and people on diuretics. Mueller says the best thing to do is limit your time outdoors and go somewhere that has air-conditioning whether that is at home or even a public library. She says if you have to spend time outdoors use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and make sure your activity isn’t too strenuous.

United Cooperative Project

Waupun Mayor Rohn Bishop says a $100 million development project by United Cooperative in the industrial park on the south side of the city will bring new jobs and create more tax base for the city. The Common Council last night approved a development agreement with United Cooperative for a feed production, soybean processing and grain storage facility.  He says the United Cooperative, City Administrator Kathy Schlieve and City Attorney Dan Vande Zande deserve credit for their work on the agreement. He says in addition to being able to extend Shaler Drive the project will create a bigger tax base for the city and the school district. The project will be completed in phases over the next three years and will add 50 new jobs with an annual payroll of $3 million to the city.

Honoring Allen Buechel

At some point the Fond du Lac County Board may end up naming a road or some county-owned facility or property in honor of late County Executive Allen Buechel. Current County Executive Sam Kaufman says there have been preliminary talks about it. The county does name some county roads after past County Board members, but limits that to using the person’s initials. Kaufman says it would be fitting to name the City-County Government Center after him, but county rules prohibit that from happening. Buechel died on March 27th. He spent nearly 46 years of his life being a county board member and county executive.

The homeowner and 2 occupants were arrested and taken to the County Jail. Facing charges are 40-year-old Brad Holly, 42-year-old Hope Phillips, and 31-year-old Ashley Moldenhauer. Holly and Moldenhauer were also on probation.
