Kaufman Seats Will Have To Be Filled

The election of Fond du Lac County Board Chairperson Sam Kaufman to the county executive’s position set up a domino effect for several seats he had including county chairperson. Kaufman says County Board first vice chair Marty Ryan is now the acting chairperson until a new one can be elected by the board at their June 21st meeting. He says in the meantime people who live within the 7th Supervisory District that he represented on the county board can apply for that opening with the Committee on Committee’s eventually interviewing candidates and making a recommendation to the county board. As for his seat on the Waupun Town Board the chairperson will appoint someone to fill Kaufman’s seat until next spring’s election. The Waupun Town Board holds its regular meeting at 7:30 tonight.

Work Underway On Middle Mile Of Lauree’s Trail

The middle mile of “Lauree’s Trail,” the multi-use trail between Ripon and Green Lake will be completed sometime next month. It will be known as the “Oberreich Foundation Mile” due to the $150,000 donation from the Oberreich Fund for completion of that one-mile section of the trail. Green Lake Greenways has been working on the trail named after Lauree Renaud since 2008. The trail was named after her following her death. Greenways President Howard Hansen says it was her vision to have a bicycle trail that connected the two communities. Greenways Treasurer Barry Rogers says when they complete Lauree’s Trail it will be about 6 miles but connections to other trails will give the area a unique 18-mile trail system. Fundraising for the third and final phase of the trail will start after completion of the middle mile. Rogers says by the time “Lauree’s Trail” is complete over $1.1 million will have been invested in it. To donate visit the Greenways website or send your donation to Green Lake Greenways, P.O. Box 321, Green Lake Wisconsin 54941.

Grothman Introduces School Safety Legislation

Last week Congressman Glenn Grothman introduced legislation that would give schools more flexibility with existing federal funds to make schools safer, more secure, and better communicate with law enforcement to identify threats. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says the Student and Teacher Safety Act will target all those areas with the goal of making schools safer. He says students and teachers have the right to feel safe in school, but as the country tragically witnessed in Uvalde we need to do more to prepare schools to properly identify and respond to violent individuals. He points out that the people who know what is best for schools are the students, parents and teachers in the local community. He says if federal dollars are already being given to schools, they should be able to use that money to protect our children.

Organ And Tissue Donations

The nurse manager for the emergency department at SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital says the harvesting of organs and tissue from donors really takes team work. The hospital was recently recognized by the University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation program with an Excellence in Tissue Donation award. Ashley Kolberg says nurses begin the process after a person dies at the hospital and eventually a team from the UW takes over and an organ and tissue donation team comes to the hospital to collect the donation. She says donating your tissue and organs is the most selfless thing you can do and it’s a beautiful process that furthers peoples’ lives. In 2021 four of the people who died at Ripon Community Hospital were tissue donors.
