6/11/22 Homes Evacuated For Gas Leak In Waupun

11 June 2022 News

No one was injured during a natural gas leak that occurred when a 4-inch gas main was struck by a piece of construction equipment during street construction in Waupun Friday afternoon. It happened around South Madison and Doty Streets about 3 pm. Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says fire crews detected unsafe levels of gas so as a precaution 20 homes were evacuated, power was cut off and gas was shut off to a substation that affected about 350 customers. The Waupun Senior Center was opened as a temporary shelter, but it was not needed. After about an hour power was restored to all but two homes. Gas was off for five homes for approximately 5 hours. DeMaa says the “all clear” was given about 6 pm.
