Jace Peterson tied the score in the ninth inning with a three-run triple and slumping Andrew McCutchen followed with a game-ending single as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied past the San Diego Padres 5-4 on Thursday night.
Jorge Alfaro’s two-run homer in the sixth off Brent Suter gave the Padres a 3-1 lead. Sergio Alcántara made it 4-1 with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Taylor Rogers (0-3) took over in the ninth but after allowing a leadoff single to Keston Hiura, hit two straight batters with pitches to load the bases for Peterson, who sent a drive off the wall in center field. Padres manager Bob Melvin called on Nabil Crismatt to face McCutchen, who snapped an 0-for-32 skid with a base hit back up the middle to win it.
Peter Strzelecki (1-0) worked two innings in relief, earning the win in his major league debut. He struck out three.
The late four-run comeback wiped out what had been an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel early. San Diego starter Sean Manaea struck out eight over six innings, while Milwaukee’s Adrian Houser had five strikeouts and also allowed just one run over five innings.
Eric Hosmer hit an RBI double in the fifth for the Padres. McCutchen tied it 1-all in the bottom half with a run-scoring groundout.
The Brewers placed catcher Omar Narvaez on the COVID-19 injured list just before the game. Catcher Alex Hall was selected from Class A Wisconsin to replace Narvaez on the active roster.
Brewers RHP Corbin Burnes (3-2, 1.95 ERA) faces the Padres for the second time this season when the series continues Friday night. Burnes allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings last time out in St. Louis and held San Diego to a run over six innings on May 24. The Padres turn to LHP MacKenzie Gore, who also threw seven scoreless innings in his last start and will be facing Milwaukee for the first time. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Reds beat the Nationals 8-1 and the Cubs beat the Cardinals 7-5. The Brewers increased their lead in the division to three games over the Cardinals.
In the Midwest League Thursday Peoria shutout the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-0 at Fox Cities Stadium. The loss drops the T-Rats to 29-19 while Peoria improves to 20-28. The teams meet again tonight at Fox Cities Stadium with the first pitch at 6:40.
After a three-run eighth inning with a go-ahead sacrifice fly from Anthony Frechette (George Washington), the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders came back for the second day in a row to beat the Green Bay Rockers 6-4 and improve to a franchise-best 4-0 to start the year.
Nick Mitchell (Western Illinois) continued his torrid start to the year, tallying his fourth straight multi-hit games with two singles and a walk. Mitchell became the first Northwoods League player in 2022 to tally double-digit hits.
The Dock Spiders fell behind early on, as the Rockers scored a run in the second off starter Andrew Pogue (Illinois), one of two runs he allowed in 4.1 innings. The bullpen held the Rockers in check, including a dominant three shutout innings from Tyler Tornberg (Rutgers) in his first appearance of the Northwoods League season.
In the fourth, the Dock Spiders took their first lead of the day thanks to a two-run double from Kyte McDonald (Alvin C.C.) to take a 2-1 lead. They would tally another run in the sixth with an RBI fielder’s choice from Evan Stone (South Carolina) to retie the game at 3-3. Before the eighth inning offense, the Dock Spiders would fall behind 4-3 after a passed ball allowed a run to come home for Green Bay.
To retake the lead, the Dock Spiders sent eight men to the plate in the eighth inning, with an RBI single from Stone, a sacrifice fly from Frechette and an RBI single from Mitchell to put the Dock Spiders ahead for good.
The Dock Spiders are back on the road Friday night with a game against the Madison Mallards at 6:08 p.m.
Jaylen Brown fueled a late charge and scored 24 points, Al Horford hit six 3-pointers, and the Celtics rode the most lopsided fourth quarter in NBA Finals history to a 120-108 victory over the Warriors in Game 1 on Thursday night.
Horford finished with 26 points and the Celtics outscored the Warriors 40-16 in the final 12 minutes after trailing by 15 points late in the third quarter. The 15th-year big man, who turns 36 Friday, played in 141 previous postseason games, most ever before playing in the NBA Finals.
Boston made its first seven tries from long distance in the fourth and wound up 9 of 12 beyond the arc in the period as almost everybody got involved in the 3-point flurry. Jayson Tatum was the lone Celtics regular who struggled offensively, finishing 3 for 17, though he did have 13 assists.
Curry scored 34 points in his return to the NBA’s big stage for the first time in three years, but the Warriors couldn’t sustain momentum from a 38-point third quarter that put them ahead 92-80.
Game 2 is Sunday night back at Chase Center.
Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre will play in the Donald Driver Charity Softball Game. The game is set for June 12 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The game starts at 1 p.m. The event raises money for the Donald Driver Foundation and other player charities.
Driver will be joined by Favre, James Jones, AJ Dillon, Aaron Jones, Desmond Bishop, Jarrett Bush, Nick Collins, Robert Ferguson, Jermichael Finley, Antonio Freeman, and Ahman Green.
