Sports for Wednesday

Patrick Wisdom hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the eighth inning, Willson Contreras and P.J. Higgins also went deep, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-7 on Tuesday night. Wisdom unloaded on a 3-2 pitch from Brad Boxberger (1-1), sending a long drive to left for his 11th home run.

Contreras connected in his second straight game, smacking a solo drive in the first against Milwaukee starter Eric Lauer. Contreras now has eight homers to lead all MLB catchers, and also hit an RBI double and scored in a four-run sixth.

Christopher Morel continued a hot start to his career with a walk and a triple, setting a club record by reaching base in his first 14 major-league games. Mychal Givens (4-0) got four outs, and David Robertson worked the ninth for his seventh save in nine chances.

Former Cub Victor Caratini gave Milwaukee a short-lived 6-3 lead in the sixth with a three-run drive against against reliever Rowan Wick.  The Brewers’ Tyrone Taylor drove in three runs after hitting home runs in both games on Monday, and Christian Yelich had two hits and scored twice.

Lauer labored through four innings, allowing three runs — two earned — and five hits. He threw 89 pitches and struck out six while walking three.

Chicago’s Justin Steele gave up three runs and three hits in five innings.

The Brewers will send Jason Alexander to the mound tonight for the four-game series finale  while RHP Kyle Hendricks (2-5, 5.20 ERA) tries to get himself on track for the Cubs. Hendricks is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in his past three starts. First pitch is at 7:05 and the game be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central on Tuesday the Reds edged the Red Sox 2-1, the Cardinals nipped the Padres 2-1 as Albert Pujols hit a walk-off homer in the 10th inning and the Pirates beat the Dodgers 5-3.  The Brewers lead the Cardinals by three games in the division.

In the Midwest League Tuesday night, the Timber Rattlers won at home over Peoria, 5-4.  The teams play again today with the first pitch at 12:10 at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders used a multi-run sixth inning for the second day in a row to beat the Wausau Woodchucks 10-2 in Wausau to start 2-0.   Four Dock Spiders pitchers combined to strike out nine Woodchucks batters, while they limited Wausau to a single run in the seventh and the ninth.

The Dock Spiders worked 12 walks at the plate, and saw 192 pitches while also tallying double-digit runs for the second straight day. Luke Novitske (Cal State East Bay) led the way with three RBI, including a two-run single to put the Dock Spiders ahead 5-0 in the sixth inning. On the base paths, the Dock ers tallied five stolen bases led by Alejandro Macario’s (Nova Southeastern) steal of second and third in the first inning. Reed Gallant (Rice) tallied the win in his first appearance of the summer, striking out four in three innings.

The Dock Spiders will travel to Green Bay tonight to take on the Green Bay Rockers at 6:35 p.m.

The Packers continued their off season workouts Tuesday.  Kicker Mason Crosby is working with a new holder this year, punter Pat O’Donnell.  The 37-year-old Crosby is hoping to bounce back from a tough 2021 season. Green Bay’s career scoring leader made just 73.5 percent of his field-goal attempts last season for his lowest accuracy rate since 2012.

Crosby was working with a new holder last season after the Packers acquired Corey Bojorquez to replace JK Scott as the punter. The Packers also switched long snappers at midseason, with Steven Wirtel replacing Hunter Bradley.  Asked about how he can put his 2021 struggles behind him, Crosby replies by saying he wants to get better from those experiences.

Crosby has a history of responding after his rare slumps. He made a career-low 63.6% of his field-goal attempts in 2012, but was accurate 89.2% of the time the following season.

The Packers have kicker Dominik Eberle in camp as well, but continue to show faith in Crosby. They’ve looked for other ways to boost their special teams.  Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has acknowledged they signed O’Donnell to take over for Bojorquez, now with the Cleveland Browns, in part because of O’Donnell’s consistency as a holder.

Cornerback Rasul Douglas practiced Tuesday after not being present for the workout last week that was open to reporters.  Offensive tackle David Bakhtiari is attending practices but isn’t participating in workouts. Bakhtiari tore his left anterior cruciate ligament on Dec. 31, 2020. He returned in the Packers’ regular-season finale last season, but wasn’t available for the playoff loss to the 49ers.
