Sports For Monday
The slumping Washington Nationals hitters are heading home with a confidence boost while the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers begin their longest trip of the season without one of their All-Star pitchers available.
Lane Thomas hit two RBI doubles and the Nationals broke out of their doldrums Sunday in an 8-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, who lost Freddy Peralta to shoulder tightness in the fourth inning.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Peralta will undergo an MRI on Monday and will be heading to the injured list. The Brewers begin an 11-game, 10-day trip Monday in San Diego.
Peralta (3-2) left after allowing a run-scoring double to Thomas during the Nationals’ six-run outburst in the fourth inning. Reliever Brent Suter came in and last two innings, giving up three runs on three hits.
The Nationals entered the day having dropped seven of their past nine, and they had scored a total of six runs in the seven losses. But they had an early 8-0 lead Sunday and cruised to the win in their final game before starting a seven-game homestand.
Milwaukee didn’t retire anyone in the fourth until Nelson Cruz – the eighth batter of the inning – got thrown out trying to stretch a bloop single down the right-field line into a double. The Nationals first eight batters of the inning all got hits, tying a Washington franchise record for consecutive plate appearances with a hit. The Nationals led 3-0 and had runners on second and third when Peralta’s injury forced his departure. Peralta, a 2021 All-Star, entered the day having allowed just one run over 12 2/3 innings in his previous two starts.
The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Maikel Franco reached on a two-out infield hit and came home on Thomas’ double to right. They extended the lead to 2-0 in the third as Cruz hit a two-out single to drive in Hernández.
Milwaukee got a solo homer from Tyrone Taylor and an RBI single by Andrew McCutchen in the fifth.
Nationals starter Aaron Sanchez (3-3) struck out one and gave up seven hits, two runs and two walks in five innings.
The Brewers begin a three-game series Monday at San Diego. RHP Adrian Houser (3-4, 3.22) will start for the Brewers. First pitch is at 8:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday, the Cubs slipped past the Diamondbacks 5-4, the Cardinals pounded the Pirates 18-4 and the Reds nipped the Blue Jays 3-2
Justin Thomas is a major champion when he least expected it. Thomas matched a PGA Championship record Sunday when he rallied from a seven-shot deficit at Southern Hills, and then saved his most exquisite shot-making for a three-hole playoff to defeat Will Zalatoris.
He closed with a 3-under 67, matching the low score of a final round made difficult more by nerves than the wind. He seized control in the playoff with a 3-wood to 35 feet on the 301-yard 17th hole for a two-putt birdie. He tapped in for par.
Thomas needed plenty of help, and Mito Pereira provided it in a tragic finish. The 27-year-old from Chile, playing in only his second major, took a one-shot lead to the final hole and drove into a creek to make double bogey. It was the first time since Phil Mickelson at Winged Foot in the 2006 U.S. Open that a player lost a one-shot lead in the final hole to lose a major.
Thomas, who had gone 14 months since his last victory at The Players Championship last year, now has a PGA Tour victory in each of his last eight years and moves to No. 5 in the world.
Golden State is one win away from the NBA Finals after winning at Dallas 109-100 Sunday. The Warriors lead the series 3-0. In the Eastern Conference Finals tonight, Miami is at Boston with the Heat up 2-1.
Ryan Blaney won his first career NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race on Sunday night at Texas Motor Speedway, earning a $1 million payday in the annual fan favorite non-points event. And he and his team celebrated twice. Blaney’s No. 12 Team Penske Ford ultimately beat Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Toyota by 0.266 seconds in an overtime finish.
The two-time defending Global Women’s Basketball Association champion Wisconsin GLO opened the season with a sweep of St. Louis. Ericka Davenport led the way for the GLO with 16 points and nine rebounds on Sunday afternoon as they cruised to a 101-78 win over the Surge. The Glo won their opener 84-68 as area star Taylor Wurtz led with 15 points in the opening win, on five-three pointers. The Glo’s next game is Saturday, June 4 in Flint.
Friday’s NCAA Division III regional baseball tournament opener had the feeling of an upset special midway through the game. Fourth-seeded Lawrence University had fought back to grab a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning against top-seeded and 12th ranked UW-Stevens Point on their home turf at Zimmermann Field. But the Pointers ended up routing St. Lawrence 11-6.
The Wautoma girl’s soccer will travel to Green Bay Notre Dame for the first round of WIAA playoffs on June 2nd. Game time is TBD.
