Sports for Tuesday

Freddy Peralta dominated over seven innings, Hunter Renfroe scored on a wild pitch and the Milwaukee Brewers two-hit the Atlanta Braves 1-0 Monday night. Peralta (3-1) gave up two hits and a walk while striking out 10 and retiring his final 11 batters. It was the sixth time in Peralta’s career that he struck out 10 or more batters. He recorded his 500th career strikeout in the seventh when he retired Marcell Ozuna on a called third strike.

The Brewers improved to 11-4 at home, the best mark in the National League.

Atlanta starter Ian Anderson (3-2) shutout Milwaukee through five innings before the Brewers broke through in the sixth. Renfroe doubled with one out and moved to third on Omar Narváez’s groundout. Renfroe then scored on Anderson’s wild pitch.

Devin Williams struck out the side in the eighth and closer Josh Hader did the same in the ninth for his 14th save in 14 appearances this season.

Anderson allowed four hits and one run in six innings. He walked two and struck out three.

The two teams meet again tonight.  t Adrian Houser (3-3, 3.86) will make his seventh start of the season. Houser is 0-2 with a 4.63 ERA in three career games (two starts) against the Braves. First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Cubs shutout the Pirates 9-0 and the Cardinals game against the Mets was postponed.   The Brewers lead the Cardinals by three games in the division.

Teams in the Midwest League had the day off Monday.  The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are back in action tonight, hosting South Bend. First pitch is at 6:40.

The Green Bay Packers and cornerback Jaire Alexander are said to be finalizing a four-year contract extension worth $84 million. The news was reported Monday morning by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal averages out to $21 million per year. It includes a $30 million signing bonus, which is a record for defensive backs. Schefter reports that Alexander will receive $42.5 million by March.  The base salary this season will be $1.076 million, which helps the Packers with the salary cap.

The Pro Bowler will be the highest paid cornerback in the league.

Alexander’s previous base salary for this year was $13.29M, and all of it counted against the cap. Alexander deal mins big cap relief for #Packers, was scheduled to count $13.29M against the cap; that number will drop significantly now.

The NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals get underway tonight as Boston plays at Miami.  The Western Conference Finals begin Wednesday night as Dallas plays at Golden State.

Last awarded following the 2018-2019 athletic year, the Midwest Conference (MWC) All-Sports Trophy has a new home. Ripon College, for just the second time in the fifty years the honor has been awarded, and first in 22 years, is this year’s Ralph Shively Men’s Athletic Award winner.

Football, men’s tennis and baseball all finished third in league play, while men’s cross country and men’s swimming & diving each finished fourth. Men’s soccer rounded out the score with a tie for eighth place this season. The nine varsity programs combined for a league-high 61.5 points, which was 6.5 more than the next-highest total.

Ripon College junior Abby Gilbertson was named to the NCAA Division-III All-Region Third Team Monday, which was released by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). This marks Ripon softball’s first All-Region selection in four years.
