Sports for Friday

The Bucks can wrap up their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Celtics tonight as they host Boston in game six.  Milwaukee trailed Boston by 14 points in the fourth quarter before coming back with a dramatic 110-107 win to go up 3-2 in the series.  Giannis Antetokounmpo had 40 points to lead the way and Jrue Holiday had 24 but it was Holiday’s two outstanding defensive plays in the final seconds that preserved the victory. Tipoff is at 6:30.

In the Western Conference semifinal series tonight Memphis is at Golden State where the Warriors lead 3-2.

Last night in the other Eastern Conference semifinal matchup, Miami won its series at Philadelphia, beating the 76ers 99-90.  The Heat won the series 4-2.  In the west, Dallas won at home over Phoenix 113-86 to force a seventh game Sunday.

After an off day Thursday, the Brewers are back in action tonight at Miami. Right-hander Corbin Burnes (1-2, 1.86 ERA) is on the mound for Milwaukee against Marlins ace, fellow right-hander Pablo Lopez (4-1, 1:00 ERA).  First pitch is at 5:40 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In the NL Central on Thursday the Orioles nipped the Cardinals 3-2 and the Reds shutout the Pirates 4-0.  The Cubs were off.   The Brewers lead the Cardinals by 2 ½ games in the division.

The UW-Oshkosh Titans posted 17 runs, tied for the third largest offensive output in WIAC tournament history, as they knocked off top seeded UW-Whitewater,17-4.   Matt Sherman led the way with six RBIs against the fifth ranked Warhawks. Meanwhile, Nicholas Shiu and Eric Modaff both had big homer runs for UWO.  They’ll take on UW-Stevens Point in the winners bracket on Friday.

Ripon College plays The University of Chicago this morning in the Midwest Conference Tournament and then either Lawrence of Illinois College this afternoon.

The Packers regular season schedule was released Thursday night.  For the second time in 3 years, the Packers will open the season at U.S. Bank Stadium against the rival Vikings. Green Bay won’t have to wait long to see former captain Za’Darius Smith in the purple and gold.

For the third year in a row, the Packers will host the Bears on Sunday night football, this time in Week 2 on September 18th. New Bears Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy makes his return to Green Bay, as do former Packers Lucas Patrick and Equanimeous St. Brown, who signed with Chicago as free agents this offseason.

The Packers will travel to Tampa Bay on September 25th. Tom Brady vs. Aaron Rodgers part 5; Brady has won the past 3 meetings between the future hall of famers, including the 2020 NFC Championship Game at Lambeau Field. Brady’s old team, the Patriots, will visit Green Bay in Week 4. Kickoff set for 3:25pm on October 2nd.

The following week, the Packers will play across the pond. Their London matchup with the Giants was announced last week. But there will be no rest for the jet lagged, the Packers will host the Jets in Week 6 at Lambeau, October 16th with a noon kickoff. The bye week doesn’t come until Week 14, the latest the Packers have ever had the bye.

And for the first time since 2016, and just the third time since 1998, the Packers schedule includes a 3-game road trip. Week 7, October 23rd in Washington at noon; a Sunday night game in Buffalo on October 30th; and a noon game in Detroit on November 6th, also a noon kickoff.

Mike McCarthy makes his return to Lambeau Field November 13th at 3:25pm. The Cowboys haven’t played in Green Bay since 2016.

The following Thursday will feature a matchup of the two top seeds in last year’s playoffs when the Packers host the Titans. Of course, both number ones were bounced in the divisional round.

The Packers will play another Sunday night game on November 27th, this time in Philadelphia. The Packers have the maximum 5 prime time games on the schedule.

Green Bay is in Chicago in Week 13, followed by that Week 14 bye. That will give the Packers a nice, long break before hosting the defending champion Rams on Monday Night Football December 19th, their 5th and final prime time game on the schedule as of now (games can always be flexed). This will be L-A’s 3rd straight trip to Lambeau, and all will have been cold weather games.

Christmas day will be spent in Miami. The Packers and Dolphins meeting in South Florida for the first time since 2014, the Andrew Quarless game.

Two home games close out the season, the Vikings on New Year’s Day, and then the Lions in the finale. Detroit and Green Bay will now have met in the season finale 7 times in the last 9 years.

The Packers also announced their 3 opponents for the preseason, but not dates and times. They will play at the 49ers in Santa Clara, then home against the Saints – the only home preseason game in 2022, and finish the preseason with a road game at Kansas City.

Ripon College senior outfielder Cormac Madigan has been selected to the Division-III Academic All-District Team, which is released each year by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), and is voted on by Sports Information Directors from across the country. The award recognizes the nation’s top student‐athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

A Chemistry-Biology major from Rosendale, Wis., Madigan holds a cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.00. In what is his first season as a member of Ripon’s baseball team, Madigan ranks second on the team with a .351 batting average as the Red Hawks’ lead-off hitter. He leads the team in stolen bases, swiping 16 bags on 18 attempts, while tying for the team lead in both hits (60) and triples (2). Madigan has scored 42 runs on the season, which ranks second on the team, while also recording eight doubles, one home run, and 21 RBI. He currently has an on-base percentage of .414 and a slugging percentage of .439.

A two-time Academic All-Conference performer as a member of Ripon’s football team, Madigan received the Midwest Conference’s Roy LeClere award this year, given to the conference’s male student-athlete who posted the highest grade point average during his junior year. That marked just the second time a Ripon student-athlete won that award in its 37 years of existence.

Madigan is now eligible to advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. First, second, and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced Wednesday, June 8 at 11 a.m. Central Time.
