Waupun Man On Trial For Murder

A jury trial got underway in Fond du Lac County court Monday for a 33-year-old Waupun man suspected of killing his grandmother in August of 2019.  Gregory Spittel faces nine charges including first degree intentional homicide for beating 75-year-old Carol Foreman in the basement of her home and leaving her to die. She suffered serious head injuries. Spittel asked a neighbor to call 911 the next day. Officers responded to the residence for a medical call. He was drunk and screaming when they entered and allegedly confronted and threatened them.  The trial is scheduled to run through Friday.

Interstate 41 Car Fire

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies, Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue, and the State Patrol responded to a single vehicle accident on I-41, south of Johnson Street, in the Town of Fond du Lac Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff’s officials say a 23-year-old Milwaukee woman was heading south when she lost control of her vehicle and struck the median guardrail. She was able to get out of the car before it started on fire. The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames and was a total loss. The woman was not hurt in the crash. I-41 was restricted to one lane of traffic north and southbound for approximately one hour as the scene was cleaned up. The time of response to the call was 4:18 pm.

FDL Man Arrested For Child Porn Possession

An 18-year-old Fond du Lac man is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail after being arrested Monday on 6 counts of possession of child pornography. The arrest followed the execution of a search warrant in the 900 block of Windsor Avenue. Police began an investigation after getting a Cyber Tip from the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children that alleged possession and/or distribution of videos of sexually explicit conduct of prepubescent children was going on at the residence. Pending a forensic analysis of the digital evidence seized during the investigation additional charges are possible.

Ripon Common Council Notes

The Ripon Common Council last night approved a low bid of just over $441,000 from Kartechner Brothers of Waupun for the reconditioning of several city streets. Only two bids were received for the work on portions of South Douglas, West Thorne, Woodside and Watertown. It will be the first time the city has worked with that firm. Public Works Director Mike Ehrenberg says they hope the improvements to those streets will last 20 years. The Council also repealed five ordinances that are out-of-date and approved the payment of a bill of nearly $181,000 from Harmony Construction Management for work on the Senior Center/Trailhead project.

Buckling Pavement

With warmer temperatures in southern Wisconsin the state’s Department of Transportation is reminding drivers that conditions could create pavement buckling. That happens when the weather quickly goes from cool to very hot. This causes slabs of pavement to expand and push against each other. If the pressure becomes great enough, the pavement can buckle and create unexpected bumps or dips. The DOT recommends slowing down, buckling up and focusing your full attention on the roadway. Watch for slowing traffic and be ready to move over for all roadside workers, including highway crews as they repair damaged pavement.

Redistricting Will Change The Way The 41st State Assembly District Looks

State Representative Alex Dallman is running for a second term representing the 41st State Assembly District but due to redistricting that district will look a little different come January 1st. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says he will be losing Ripon, the Town of Ripon and a portion of southern Green Lake County. That will include the Town of Marquette and south but he will be gaining some area to the west in the direction of Portage. Dallman says if he’s reelected Ripon will continue to be of interest to him because what is good for Green Lake is likely to be good for Ripon as well. Ripon and the Town of Ripon will become part of the 42nd State Assembly District which is currently represented by Jon Plumer.

Ministry Of Truth Criticized

Congressman Glenn Grothman has joined 175 of his Republican colleagues sending a letter to the Secretary of Department of Homeland Security asking for answers about the Disinformation Governance Board that was created last month. According to a DHS Fact Sheet, the Department is “focused on disinformation that threatens the security of the American people, including disinformation spread by foreign states.” Letter signatories are worried about its impact domestically on free speech and appointing a self-proclaimed, “internationally-recognized expert on disinformation, Nina Jankowicz to head up the board.  Grothman says he’s concerned the so-called “Ministry of Truth” will in fact promote the President’s version of truth on domestic and international issues. He says it is one of the scariest things the Biden Administration has created.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Among the top three concerns in a Fond du Lac County Community Health Assessment is mental health. County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says one of the biggest problems in getting a person the help they need is the stigma that is attached to having a mental health problem which is something they are trying to eliminate. May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. The National Alliance on Mental Illness says the theme for the month is “Together for Mental Health.” More resources are available at the NAMI website. They also have a helpline 800-950-6264 (NAMI). You can also text “NAMI” to 741741.
