Al Horford and Jayson Tatum scored 30 points apiece and led the Boston Celtics’ fourth-quarter comeback in a 116-108 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night that tied their Eastern Conference semifinal at two games apiece.
The two teams have alternated victories in this best-of-seven series, which continues Wednesday with Game 5 in Boston.
Horford scored 16 points and Tatum 12 in the fourth quarter alone to help the Celtics outscore the defending NBA champion Bucks 43-28 in the final period. Horford’s 30 points were a career playoff high for the 35-year-old veteran.
Tatum scored eight points and Horford had six during a 14-2 run that put the Celtics ahead for good and gave them a 106-96 advantage with 3:33 left. The Bucks wouldn’t cut the margin below six the rest of the way.
Giannis Antetokounmpo had 34 points, 18 rebounds and five assists for the Bucks.
In the Western Conference semifinals, Golden State defeated Memphis 101-98 to tie their series at two games each.
Colin Moran homered in his third straight at-bat, Brandon Drury and Kyle Farmer each hit a three-run homer, and the Cincinnati Reds won two straight games for the first time this season, rallying past the Milwaukee Brewers 10-5 on Monday night. The Reds, baseball’s worst team at 6-23, bounced back after being swept in three games at Milwaukee last week by a combined score of 34-12.
Moran connected in the second inning off Brandon Woodruff (3-2) to make it 1-0. His first longball of the season was a grand slam in the sixth inning of Sunday’s 7-3 win over the Pirates, and he hit a two-run blast in his next at-bat. Moran has started the last seven games with Joey Votto on the COVID-19-related injured list.
Luis Castillo, who missed all of spring training and the first 28 games with a right shoulder strain, made his season debut for Cincinnati. He allowed one hit through the first three innings before Rowdy Tellez doubled in two runs in the fourth. Omar Narvaez then homered leading off the fifth to make it 3-1.
Castillo was pulled later in the fifth and gave up three runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. The Reds still don’t have a quality start this season.
Luis Cessa (1-0) escaped the fifth before allowing two runs in the sixth. Alexis Diaz, Jeff Hoffman and Joel Kuhnel combined to throw 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
TJ Friedl began the Reds’ rally in the fifth with a run-scoring double. Drury followed by taking Woodruff deep to center to put Cincinnati ahead 5-3. Woodruff allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings, giving up eight hits while striking out six and walking two.
Reds rookie right-hander Hunter Greene (1-4, 8.71 ERA) allowed a club record-tying five home runs at Milwaukee last Thursday. Freddy Peralta (1-1, 5.18) tossed five innings in the Brewers’ 18-4 win over the Reds last Wednesday. Frist pitch is at 5:40 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Monday the Pirates beat the Dodgers 5-1 and the Cubs shutout the Padres 6-0. The Cardinals had the day off. Milwaukee leads St. Louis by two games in the division.
There were no games in the Midwest League on Monday. Tonight the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers play at the Quad Cities. The T-Rats are 17-10 while the Quad Cities are 11-16.
Seventh rounder Rasheed Walker is the latest draft pick to sign their rookie contract, the team announced on Monday. Walker missed practice on the first day of rookie minicamp, but was able to get on the field for Saturday’s practice. The former Penn State tackle was projected as a mid-round pick, but fell to the Packers in round three. A three year starter for the Nittany Lions, Walker was a fixture at left tackle. Then on one of his first days in Green Bay he met an All-Pro tackle that anchors the Packers offensive line.
Second round pick Christian Watson, fourth rounders Romeo Doubs and offensive lineman Zach Tom are the last three draft picks to be signed to rookie deals.
The Packers also announced the signing of a tryout player from the rookie minicamp, linebacker Kobe Jones. He spent time on the Dolphins practice squad last year, and was with the Tennessee Titans earlier this offseason. Jones played in 50 games over four seasons for Mississippi State in college and recorded 102 tackles and seven sacks during his time in Starkville, Miss. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021.
