Lead Paint Still An Issue In FDL County

While Fond du Lac County Supervisors were reviewing the Health Department’s Annual Report last week Supervisor Mary Hayes brought up an interesting fact about children and lead testing in the county. Hayes said she discussed the issue with the Health Department’s Supervisor of Health Services Danielle Vollendorf. Hayes wanted to know where children suffering from lead poisoning were getting that lead from. Vollendorf told her it was always from lead paint and not from water traveling through lead pipes. Vollendorf also told her the lead paint problem was an issue throughout the county not just the city of Fond du Lac. A number of communities in Fond du Lac County including Fond du Lac and Ripon have gotten safe drinking water loans from the state to replace lead pipes.

From Assembly Candidate To Local Office Holder

Luke Dretske

Two years ago then Ripon College student Luke Dretske ran for the 41st State Assembly seat, these days he is in politics but on the local level. Dretske did work in the state legislature for State Representative Jeremy Thiesfeldt’s office. During the Spring Election he won seats on the Berlin City Council and the Green Lake County Board. He says rather than go with the usual learning curve for a new office holder he’s hoping to hit the ground running a little sooner. He says the Green Lake County Board is going through some changes with a new County Board Chairperson and Vice Chair and needs to fill two vacant seats. One thing he would like to see accomplished in Berlin is more economic development. Dretske says neighboring communities like Ripon are able to make progress and Berlin should be able to as well.
