Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and nine rebounds and the defending NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks routed the Chicago Bulls 116-100 on Wednesday night to finish off the first-round series in five games.
The third-seeded Bucks advanced to face second-seeded Boston in the Eastern Conference semifinals, with Game 1 on Sunday in Boston. The Celtics swept Brooklyn.
After splitting the first two games, the Bucks won the last three by an average margin of 23.3 points. They won those three games without Khris Middleton, the All-Star who sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during the fourth quarter of Game 2. Coach Mike Budenholzer said the Bucks got off to a good start in the first quarter and that was important.
Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way for the Bucks with 33 points, including 11-15 from the floor and 11-14 from the free throw line. He said his teammates are very important to winning and he has a lot of confidence in them.
Pat Connaughton hit 6 of 9 3-pointers and scored 20 points, and Bobby Portis added 14 points and career-high 17 rebounds. The Bucks’ largest lead was 29.
Patrick Williams scored 23 points, Nikola Vucevic 19 and Coby White 17 for the Bulls. Vucevic also had 16 rebounds and six assists. DeMar DeRozan, who had scored 41 points in the Bulls’ Game 2 victory, was held to 11 points Wednesday while shooting 5 of 10.
Chicago didn’t handle the loss of key players quite as well. The Bulls played without the starting backcourt they used for the first four games with two-time All-Star Zach LaVine in health and safety protocols and Alex Caruso in concussion protocol.
Elsewhere last night in the Western Conference playoffs Golden State beat Denver 102-98 to win that series 4-1.
Tonight, Philadelphia is at Toronto. The 76ers lead 3-2, Phoenix is at New Orleans as the Suns lead 3-2 and Dallas is at Utah. The Spurs also have a 3-2 lead in that series.
Aaron Ashby combined with four relievers on a one-hitter, Tyrone Taylor singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 on Wednesday night. Neither team got a hit until the sixth inning. Ashby’s no-hit bid ended when Bryan Reynolds hit a hard shot that deflected off the glove of third baseman Mike Brosseau for a single. Manager Craig Counsel said Ashby’s off speed pitches were excellent and when he missed pitches, they were down in the strike zone.
Making his second start of the season and sixth of his career, Ashby worked 5 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out six. The rookie left-hander allowed his only run on a double-play grounder in the sixth. Trevor Gott (1-0) came on and struck out Michael Chavis.
Brad Boxberger, Devin Williams and Josh Hader worked one scoreless inning each. Hader finished for his major league-leading 10th save as NL Central-leading Milwaukee won for the eighth time in 10 games.
Christian Yelich and Hunter Renfroe started the Brewers’ rally in the seventh with back-to-back singles off Wil Crowe (1-1). First baseman Yoshi Tsutsugo then mishandled Rowdy Tellez’s grounder, allowing Yelich to score. Taylor followed by lining a single to left to make it 2-1. The Brewers made it 3-1 in the ninth when Wong drew a bases-loaded walk from Sam Howard.
Kolten Wong had a one-out double into the left-field corner in the top of the sixth off Bryse Wilson for the Brewers’ first hit. That was the only knock against Wilson, who pitched four innings in relief of opener Dillon Peters.
Brewers RHP Freddy Peralta (0-1, 7.50 ERA) faces LHP Jose Quintana (0-1, 3.86) on Thursday in the finale of the three-game series. First pitch is at 11:35 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Cardinals beat the Mets 10-5, the Padres downed the Reds 8-5 and the Cubs over the Braves 6-3.
It’s day one of the NFL Draft this evening. The Packers have 11 total picks including two in the first round and two in the second. Their first pick is the number 22nd overall and they also have the 28th overall pick in the first round. The Packers also have the 53rd and 59th picks overall in the second round. The Packers will no doubt draft a wide receiver or two after losing Davante Adams to a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. Even though Green Bay doesn’t have a lot of veterans at that spot, General Manager Brian Gutekunst said they do have veteran experience with Randall Cobb and Alan Lazard along with newly acquired veteran receiver Sammy Watkins.
The Packers will be looking for a rookie who may be able to step in and contribute immediately in a big way. He was asked about the younger receiver’s coming into the league, who play like veterans.
The draft begins tonight at 7:00 CDT from Las Vegas.
