Sports for Wednesday

Willy Adames homered twice and drove in a career-high seven runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-8 on Tuesday night.  Adames hit a two-run blast in the first inning and a three-run drive during a six-run sixth for the NL Central-leading Brewers. It was the first multi-homer game of his career. He added a two-run double in the fifth and finished 4 for 5, raising his batting average 45 points to .239.

The game was tied 4-4 in the sixth when Rowdy Tellez singled with one out off reliever Aaron Fletcher (0-1). Tyrone Taylor followed with a triple and came home on a single by Omar Naváez.  With two outs, Jace Peterson singled, Kolten Wong singled home Naváez and Adames sent a hanging slider from Heath Hembree an estimated 413 feet into the left-field bleachers.

Brent Suter (1-0) allowed Kevin Newman’s game-tying two-run single in the fifth in relief of starter Brandon Woodruff but wasn’t charged with a run in two innings. Josh Hader entered with two on and two out in the ninth and struck out Tucupita Marcano for his ninth save, which leads the majors.

Ke’Bryan Hayes went 3-for-3 and scored twice for the Pirates, who fell to 0-4 against Milwaukee this season.

Adames had five RBIs in his first 17 games of the season, and no more than one in a game. His previous career high for a game was four.

Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller allowed four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out one.

LHP Aaron Ashby (0-2, 3.18 ERA) will start for the Brewers on Wednesday. Three of his four appearances this season have been in relief. RHP Bryse Wilson (0-0, 6.35) is scheduled to start for the Pirates. First pitch is at 5:35 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Padres beat the Reds 9-6, the Braves downed the Cubs 3-1 and the Mets shutout the Cardinals 3-0. The Brewers lead the Cardinals by one game in the NL Central while the Pirates at 2 ½ out, the Cubs 3 ½ out and the Reds are 7 ½ games behind.

The Milwaukee Bucks can wrap up their Eastern Conference series with the Chicago Bulls tonight at home tonight.  The Bucks lead the series 3-1 and have won two straight.  After losing game two in Milwaukee last Wednesday, the Bucks beat the Bulls by 30 points last Friday and then routed the Bulls again on Sunday 119-95.

In the other NBA playoff game tonight Denver is at Golden State with the Warriors up 3-1.

Last night Miami won at home over Atlanta 97-94 and won their series 3-1.   Memphis beat Minnesota 111-109 to take a 3-2 lead and Phoenix beat New Orleans 115-97 to take a 3-2 lead in their series.

The NFL Draft begins Thursday night and runs through Saturday.   The Packers have some needs, especially on Special Teams.  General Manager Brian Gutekunst was asked how the needs of that unit will be addressed with new coordinator Rich Bisaccia.   He  said Bisaccia will be involved and said that need  will probably be addressed on the third day.

Gutekunst was also asked about how the team will approach trades to move up in the draft.  He said trading up usually is in the first round and involves a specific player.

The Green Bay Gamblers begin a new chapter in their program. The team introduces Mike Leone as their new head coach and general manager.   He replaces Pat Mikesch who spent the last eight seasons in Green Bay. The team finished last in the USHL Eastern Conference standings this past year.  Leone has spent the last three years as an assistant coach with the USA Hockey National Development Program.

Ripon College freshman infielder Samuel Ott has been named Midwest Conference Performer of the Week, as released Monday by the conference office. The Red Hawks swept the weekly conference honors, with fellow first-year player Mitchel Lukasik  receiving MWC Pitcher of the Week honors.

A Business Management major from Watertown, Ott led Ripon to a 4-2 record in six games last week, batting .462 (12-26) with two doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI, and nine runs scored, while recording a slugging percentage of 1.000. In Sunday’s game at Knox College, Ott recorded a career-high seven RBI as he crushed a pair of home runs to lead Ripon to a 21-6 victory.

Ott now leads Ripon with 40 RBI this season, while ranking second on the team in both doubles (10) and home runs (5). Last week’s performance raised his season batting average to .351, which currently ranks third on the team.
