Name Released From Fatal Waupaca County Traffic Accident
The Waupaca County Sheriff’s office has released the name of a Menomonee Falls man that was killed in a single-vehicle crash last week. Lee Worby was traveling east on Highway 10 on April 5th when he lost control on Highway 10 at County Highway A. His vehicle rolled over. An ambulance took him to a hospital in Waupaca and he was later transferred to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah. He died this week of his injuries. Sheriff’s officials say alcohol was a factor in the accident. Waupaca Police and Gold Cross Ambulance assisted at the scene.
T Shirt Scam Resurfaces
A scam the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection warned residents about last fall is resurfacing. It involves text messages pretending to sell T-shirts in support of local fire departments. The text messages are starting to pop up in communities around the state again and may appear to come from local fire departments but are actually from imposters attempting to steal money and personal information. The Waupun Fire Department posted an example of one of the texts on their Facebook page which looked like it was sent by someone from the Mayville Fire Department and has a link in it. Officials advise not clicking on those links and to delete the message. If you have questions about a fundraiser for a local fire department or similar organization you should contact them directly through a trusted phone number.
Feyen Bills Meet With Mixed Success At Governor’s Desk
Governor Evers last week acted on five bills authored by State Senator Dan Feyen signing two into law but vetoing three others. One of the bills signed into law allows a person the option to register as an organ donor when purchasing a hunting, fishing or trapping license. Another modifies the parameters for a Wisconsin startup receiving Qualified New Business Venture credits. The state lawmaker from Fond du Lac says he was very happy to see those bills signed into law but incredibly disappointed the three others were vetoed. One of those had to do with how the WEDC would track talent attraction funds, another created a five year penalty enhancer for committing battery against a corrections employee while in custody, and a third would have required the UW system to post their admissions requirement online.
Waupun Utilities Survey
Waupun Utilities is conducting a survey for the small to midsize businesses its serves, with the goal of gathering insight on overall satisfaction with the utility. The utility will use the information to determine how it can best support the community’s development and economic growth, while ensuring local businesses receive safe, reliable, and affordable service. Waupun Utilities’ business customers may receive an email this month asking for feedback. The utility encourages businesses to participate in the survey, which is being conducted by its not-for-profit wholesale power supplier, WPPI Energy, through E Source, a third-party vendor. Waupun Utilities General Manager Steve Brooks says, “By regularly measuring satisfaction levels, we can respond to customers efficiently and effectively.”
Prediabetes Can Be Managed
SSM Health Greater Fond du Lac Region Clinical Nutrition Manager Janeah Schwarz says a few changes in diet and exercise can help those who have prediabetes avoid becoming full diabetics. Schwarz also is a registered dietitian nutritionist for SSM Health hospitals in Fond du Lac, Ripon and Waupun. She says prediabetes is like a warning sign for diabetes. Schwarz notes if you’re 45-years-old or older, overweight, and of certain ethnic groups you are a higher risk of prediabetes. Other factors can also contribute like smoking and sleep disorders. She says the problem is the majority of those 96 million Americans who have prediabetes aren’t even aware they have it. She recommends losing weight, eating healthier, and getting regular exercise to reduce your chances of becoming diabetic. Schwarz suggests gradually making changes so you will stick with them.
Need For Nurses
One of the programs Moraine Park Technical College would like to bolster on their campus in Fond du Lac is for health care education. MPTC President Bonnie Baerwald says over the next 10 years we will see a significant number of people leaving nursing and health care creating a need for those with the skills to fill those vacancies. She says for that reason they would like to expand and add a health care simulation space in Fond du Lac. She says there is a huge need for nurses. A survey was sent out earlier this month about which future business and industry needs MPTC District voters were more likely to support. Those randomly selected to get the survey have until April 25th to reply.
Cops And Kids Program Good Turnout
Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says the department was happy to team up with the Ripon Early Birds Kiwanis for an Easter event at Barlow Park last weekend. The Kiwanis brought the Easter Bunny in last Saturday morning to distribute treat bags to kids while police officers passed out free books as part of the Kiwanis ‘n Cops ‘n Kids program. Wallner says there was a great turnout for the program. Webbie from Webster’s, Rally the Redhawk, the A & W Bear, and Olaf from Frozen were also on hand for the fun.
