Giannis Antetokounmpo passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become Milwaukee’s career scoring leader on a 3-pointer that forced overtime, and then made two free throws in the final seconds to give the Bucks a 120-119 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night.  The Bucks remain a half-game behind the Heat in the Eastern Conference.

The defending NBA champions clinched a return to the postseason with the win, in which Antetokounmpo had 44 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Jrue Holiday added 19 points and Khris Middleton had 16 before being ejected for a flagrant foul midway through the third quarter.

Kevin Durant had 26 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds for the Nets, but missed a 3-pointer that would have won it. Kyrie Irving scored 25 points and Bruce Brown had 23.

Antetokounmpo entered the game 39 points behind Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s career scoring leader who had 14,211 points after beginning his career in Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo passed him with a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left that knotted it at 110.

The Bucks host the Clippers tonight.

Badgers star and Big Ten Player of the Year Johnny Davis announced he’s declaring for the NBA Draft on Thursday.  The La Crosse, Wis. product made the announcement during ESPN’s NBA Today. Followed quickly by a post to his Instagram thanking the Badgers and fans for their support as he moves forward with his basketball career. 

Davis had a breakout season for the Badgers during the 2021-22 season. Going from a bench player to starting all 31 games, while increasing his scoring to 19.7 points per game.  The super sophomore was a consensus All-American, and is a finalist for the Naismith Player of the Year Award. Davis is the number nine prospect in ESPN’s Top 100 heading into the draft.

The Brewers lost 10-5 to the Angels at home Thursday in Cactus League baseball.  Each team scored twice in the first inning but the Angels added one in the second and two in the third to take a 5-2 lead after three innings.  The Brewers tacked on one in the fourth inning before the Angels erupted for five runs in the fifth.  Justin Upton hit two homers and drove in six runs for the Angels while Keston Hiura hit a two-run homer in the sixth, his fourth of the spring for Milwaukee.  Shohei Ohtani have up three runs, two earned, along with two hits while striking out four and walking three for the Angels and picked  up the win.  Eric Lauer was shelled for six runs, all earned, while giving up seven hits in 3 2/3 innings and took the loss.  The Brewers host the Cubs today with the first pitch at 3:10.  The game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

WNBA icon Swin Cash, NBA stars Manu Ginobili and Tim Hardaway, former longtime NBA head coach George Karl and West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins are among those reportedly set to be inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2022.  A formal announcement of the 16-member 2022 class is expected Saturday, but The Athletic first reported news on the five inductees Thursday.

Karl coached the Milwaukee Bucks for five seasons, taking over in 1999, and took the Bucks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2001 and went 205-173 for Milwaukee.  Overall, Karl was a head coach for six teams from 1984-2016 and amassed a regular season record of 1,175-824. He had a playoff record of 85-105 and led the 1996 Seattle Super Sonics to the 1996 NBA Finals. He was also the 2012-13 coach of the year with the Denver Nuggets.

The Wisconsin Herd will hit the road to face off against the Delaware Blue Coats tonight, with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.

Russell Knox shot a seven-under par 65 Thursday to take the first-round lead in the Valero Texas open.  He leads Rasmus Hojggard by one stroke and four other golfers by two strokes.
