Sports for March 31st

In Cactus League action Wednesday the Padres beat the Brewers 4-2.  Milwaukee starter Willy Peralta went four innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out five and walking one. He gave up a two-run homer to Manny Machado in the third inning. The Brewers managed just six hits.  San Diego starter Nick Martinez (1-0) scattered two hits over four innings to pick up his first win of the spring.  The Brewers host the Angels this afternoon with the first pitch at 3:10.

In another spring training action Monday, the Cardinals erupted for 15 runs in the 8th inning to wallop the Nationals, 29-8.

In the NBA tonight the Bucks are at Brooklyn.  Milwaukee is coming off a 118-116 win at Philadelphia Tuesday night as Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 40 points while grabbing 14 rebounds, dishing out six assists and making a game-deciding block of Joel Embidd in the final seconds to decide the win.   The Bucks (47-28) are a game behind the Heat in the Eastern Conference while the Nets (40-36) are 8 ½ back.

There is more major retirement news for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Head coach Bruce Arians is stepping down from his post and moving to the team’s front office, with defensive coordinator Todd Bowles replacing him as the new head coach, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the Bucs are giving Bowles a new five-year contract as their head coach, according to a source informed of the agreement. Bowles was one of the highest-paid defensive coordinators in the NFL and will now be paid a salary in line with other head coaches around the league, per Garafolo.  The Bucs later announced the change and said Arians will take on a senior football consultant role within the organization  NBC’s Peter King first reported the news.

Arians went 80-48-1 as a head coach in his career.  His departure from the sideline comes roughly 13 months after he led the Buccaneers to the franchise’s second Super Bowl title in Tom Brady‘s first season with the club. Prior to his three-year run in Tampa (31-18 record; 5-1 in the playoffs), Arians spent decades as an NFL assistant before serving as interim head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2012, when he won his first AP Coach of the Year award. He served the next five seasons as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals (2013-17), where he went 49-30-1 record with two playoff appearances and won his second Coach of the Year award (2014). He retired following the 2017 season, spending a year as a game analyst for CBS, before joining Tampa in 2019.

The NFL will require all of its professional football teams to hire a minority coach or a female as an offensive assistant starting in the 2022 season.  Earlier this week, the league made the announcement as team owners gathered in Florida for the annual league meeting.  Among the NFL’s initiatives to enhance opportunities for minority coaching candidates, teams will now be required to hire a minority coach as an offensive assistant, as reported by the NFL Network’s Judy Battista.

The NFL reports it is also looking at having teams invite staff members to league events. It’s an idea Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera said he believes would help the cause since it would allow minority candidates to get acquainted with decision-makers in more relaxed settings.  League officials also said the NFL is putting together a committee to review its diversity hiring practices.  The diversity advisory committee includes business leaders, academics and former Houston Texans GM Rick Smith.  According to the NFL Network, the group will review league and club policies in light of ongoing concerns over a lack of diversity in hiring

The 32 clubs released a joint statement Monday regarding their commitment to increasing diversity among ownership:

“The NFL member clubs support the important goal of increasing diversity among ownership. Accordingly, when evaluating a prospective ownership group of a member club pursuant to League policies, the membership will regard it as a positive and meaningful factor if the group includes diverse individuals who would have a significant equity stake in and involvement with the club, including serving as the controlling owner of the club.”

According to the NFL, other diversity, equity and inclusion-related changes are expected before the January 2023 hiring cycle.

The Wautoma girls soccer game at Berlin that was scheduled for this afternoon has been cancelled.  The schools  are working on a rescheduling date.

Also, the Wautoma at Westfield golf meet that was supposed to be held in Westfield next week is now going to be held at Waushara Country Club.  Westfield will now host on April 19th for JV and varsity on April 21st.
