Giannis Antetokounmpo had 26 points and 16 rebounds and the Milwaukee Bucks scored a season-high 44 points in the second quarter on the way to a 130-106 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night. Jrue Holiday had 21 points and eight assists, and Bobby Portis added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks, who were coming off a loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday.
LaMelo Ball scored 24 points to lead Charlotte. Terry Rozier finished with 17 points and eight assists. Charlotte has split its last two games since returning from the All-Star break.
Milwaukee made its first 26 free throws and finished 32 of 37 from the line. Giannis made all 14 of his free throws. Milwaukee outrebounded Charlotte 62-41. The game was tied at 32-all after the first quarter, and Charlotte trailed by nine, 48-39, with just under seven minutes left in the second. The Bucks outscored the Hornets 38-14 over the rest of the quarter and led 76-53 at halftime. Portis scored eight points during the run. The Bucks’ previous high point total in a quarter this season was 43 points in the third period of a 117-113 win at Boston on December 25th.
The Bucks host Miami on Wednesday. The Heat has won two out of three against the Bucks this season.
There was no deal on Monday between Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association for a new collective bargaining agreement, but following a marathon negotiating session that went into the early hours Tuesday morning, there is optimism that the two sides could be nearing an agreement that would allow the regular season to start on time.
Despite MLB’s Monday night deadline to reach a deal before rescheduling Opening Day, the bargaining session – which lasted more than 16 hours – prompted the league to move the deadline to 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The two sides will meet at 11 a.m. ET in an effort to work out the details on a new CBA and potentially pave the way for Spring Training camps to open later this week, and for Opening Day to take place on March 31 as scheduled.
Some progress was made throughout the day on a number of issues, including minimum salary, a pre-arbitration bonus pool and the competitive balance tax, though final details are still being worked out.
One of the biggest issues of the day revolved around an expanded postseason; the league has been aiming for a 14-team field, while the players were countering with a 12-team playoff.
As the NFL world anticipates Aaron Rodgers’ decision on his future, the Packers are preparing for a continued stay. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Packers and Rodgers’ representation are working on a deal should he decide to remain in Green Bay.
“Nothing is done, but they are having discussions,” Rapoport said on NFL Total Access. “They are having negotiations to have a deal, hopefully for them, ready to go if and when Aaron Rodgers firmly and finally decides that he wants to return.”
Rapoport adds it would be a short-term deal that would make Rodgers the highest-paid player in the NFL on a per year basis.
With several key free-agent decisions ahead for the Packers, particularly that of All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams, Green Bay’s offseason plans hinge on Rodgers’ decision. Preparing for the team’s best-case scenario, in this case Rodgers deciding to stay, is an ideal move that should expedite the process of a return.
Rodgers, 38, has maintained he doesn’t plan to drag out questions about his future — whether he intends to return to Green Bay, request a trade, or retire — but says there is a lot to consider. A decision on his future has been anticipated before the 2021 season began after Rodgers revised his contract following an offseason standoff with the club. The four-time MVP has said he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuild.
The UW-Oshkosh men’s basketball team opens the NCAA Division III tournament at home against Blackburn, while Marian University travels to UW-Platteville. The 64-team field was announced Monday Morning. WIAC regular season and tournament champion Titans (22-3) face the Beavers (11-17), which won the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament to win an automatic bid.
The Sabres (19-8), champions of the NACC tourney as a #5 seed, face the Pioneers (21-5), who lost the WIAC title game against UWO. The only other state team in the field is UW-LaCrosse (20-6), which faces Heidelberg (18-7), which won an at-large bid out of the Ohio Athletic Conference. The finals will be played March 18-19 at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Arena in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
UW-Oshkosh is the most recent national champion due to its 2019 title, and the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 tournaments due to COVID-19.
The Wisconsin Badgers are back in action tonight. After a road win against Rutgers Saturday, #10 Wisconsin hosts #8 Purdue at the Kohl Center. The Badgers are currently in first place in the Big Ten standings.
For the first time, Green Bay Packers fans will need a passport to attend a regular season game. The team announced Monday the Packers will play a home game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London in 2022. The Packers had previously been the only team to not have played a regular-season game in the NFL International Series, which began in 2007.
“The Green Bay Packers are excited to make our international debut during the 2022 season,” Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy said. “Our fans in the UK and elsewhere in Europe have been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to see the Packers play in their backyard and that desire becomes a reality this season.
Dates, matchups and kickoff times will be confirmed as part of the full 2022 schedule announcement later this year. The team has played abroad before, just never during the regular season. Green Bay played in three international preseason games: in Toronto in 1997, Tokyo in 1998 and Winnipeg in 2019. This will be the ninth Packers home game as part of the 17-game schedule. Green package ticket holders will still get six home games and Gold package will still get two.
Last year, as part of the NFL’s expansion of the regular season to 17 games, it was determined that up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams were eligible for a ninth regular-season home game would instead be designated to play a neutral-site international game.
In addition, the NFL says the New Orleans Saints will also host a game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London this season. Other international games include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosting a game in Munich, the Jacksonville Jaguars hosting a game at Wembley Stadium and the Arizona Cardinals playing a game at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Green Bay, Detroit, and Washington D.C. are the three finalists to host the 2024 draft, Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy announced on Monday. Murphy said the decision to which city that will get to host the draft will be decided at the NFL league meetings at the end of March. Detroit and
Green Bay have never hosted the draft, while Washington D.C. hosted back in 1941. Milwaukee hosted the 1940 NFL Draft.
