Canada defeated archrival Team USA to win women’s ice hockey gold Thursday at the Beijing Olympics in the latest thrilling chapter of the sport’s greatest rivalry.
Marie-Philip Poulin had two goals and an assist while goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens made 38 saves in Canada’s 3-2 win. Hilary Knight and Amanda Kessel scored for the U.S.
This was the sixth meeting between the U.S. and Canada for Olympic women’s ice hockey gold since the event was added in 1998. The Americans won twice (1998, 2018) while Canada has won gold five times — four times against the U.S. and against Sweden in 2006, when the U.S. settled for bronze.
Canada finished the tournament with an Olympic-record 57 goals scored. The Canadians previously defeated the Americans 4-2 in the preliminary round.
Norway continues to lead in gold and total medals at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. Norway has won 13 gold, seven silver and eight bronze for 28 total medals. The ROC is next with 24 and the U.S. and Germany are tied with 21 medals. The U.S. team has earned eight gold, eight silver and five bronze.
The Bucks are back in action tonight, hosting the 76ers at Fiserv Forum. Milwaukee (36-23) is in third place in the Eastern Conferenc, 1 ½ games behind the Heat and two games in back of the first-place Bulls. Philadelphia (34-23) is in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, three games behind the Bulls.

Kur Kuath had 15 points and four blocks and Kam Jones posted 19 points as Marquette beat Georgetown 77-66 on Wednesday night. Justin Lewis had 13 points and eight rebounds and Collin Holloway had 15 points for the Hoyas (6-19, 0-14), whose losing streak stretched to 15 games. Marquette (17-9, 9-6 Big East Conference). Tyler Kolek added 6 points and 11 assists.
The UW-Oshkosh women’s basketball team upset 7th-ranked UW-Whitewater 70-67 in the final game of the regular season for the Titans Wednesday night. Nikki Arneson led three Titans in double figures with 16 points. Both Jenna Jorgenson and Leah Porath finished with 14 points. Oshkosh took its first lead at 52-51 with 3:46 to play and had the lead for good at 56-54 with 1:49 to go. The Titans improve to 18-5 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
The Green Bay Packers have hired Byron Storer as assistant special teams coach. Head Coach Matt LaFleur made the announcement Tuesday.
Storer is entering his ninth season as an NFL coach, including his eighth coaching special teams. He joins the Packers after four seasons with the Raiders as an assistant special teams coach (2018-21). In 2021, Las Vegas ranked No. 11 in Rick Gosselin’s NFL special teams rankings and K Daniel Carlson set franchise records for field-goal percentage (94.3 pct., 33-35) and most points scored in a single season (150), surpassing his own mark of 144 points in 2020. The Raiders also saw P AJ Cole earn a spot in the Pro Bowl as well as be named first-team All-Pro by The Associated Press and All-NFL by the Pro Football Writers of America after leading the league with a gross punting average of 50.0 yards. Storer spent two years with the San Diego Chargers, first as a special teams assistant (2012) and then as an assistant linebackers coach (2013). He began his coaching career as an assistant special teams coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2010-11). Storer played fullback and on special teams for the Buccaneers (2007-09) before an injury ended his playing career.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Conference Realignment Task Force Committee reviewed a realignment request on Feb. 10, which was remanded to the committee by the Board of Control at its January meeting.
Reviewing plans that were originally submitted and subsequently modified by Berlin and Ripon, the Conference Realignment Task Force voted to advance a recommendation to create a 13-team conference by combining the East Central and South Central Conferences. The Board will review the recommendation and have the options to approve, reject or remand it for further consideration at its March 8 meeting.
The schools directly impacted are Berlin, Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Kewaskum, Plymouth, Ripon, Waupun and Winneconne from the East Central Conference and Adams-Friendship, Mauston, Nekoosa, Wautoma, Westfield and Wisconsin Dells from the South Central Conference.
Wisconsin Herd guard Rayjon Tucker has been named to the 2022 USA Men’s World Cup Qualifying Team. This according to USA Basketball announced today.
Tucker has appeared in 25 games (25 starts) for the Herd this season. During the regular season, Tucker averaged 20.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 33.0 minutes per game. Tucker posted five double-double games including a career-high 16 rebounds. He also has earned two NBA 10-day hardship contracts with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets.
Also selected for the February 2021 USA World Cup Qualifying Team were Jordan Bell, Tarik Black, Brian Bowen II, Langston Galloway, Jared Harper, Joe Johnson, Juwan Morgan, Matt Ryan, David Stockton, Paul Watson, and Justin Wright-Foreman.
Former NBA head coach Jim Boylen will serve as head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s World Cup Qualifying Team. Also returning to the sidelines as assistant coaches are USA Basketball experienced coaches Ty Ellis and Othella Harrington.
The USA squad will open training camp Feb. 18 in Washington, D.C., and will participate in the second competition window of 2021-23 FIBA World Cup Qualifying games that will see the Americans face Puerto Rico (1-1) on Feb. 24 and Mexico (2-0) on Feb. 27. Both games will be played at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.
