Waupaca County Sheriff Timothy Wilz this week presented Leonard Borgen with a Medal for Gallantry for saving the life of a woman who crashed her vehicle on U.S. Highway 10 on December 22nd.  Kathy was driving in the fast lane near Morgan Drive when a semi in the other lane made an abrupt lane change. In trying to avoid the semi she overcorrected and her vehicle ended up overturning in the median where there was about 2 feet of water. Sheriff Wilz says Leonard stopped to provide assistance and was able to extricate her through the passenger side door. He says Kathy was seat belted in on the driver’s side and surely would have drowned without Leonard’s assistance.

Senator Johnson On The Ukraine

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson says Russia’s probable invasion of the Ukraine is another example of what he calls the “Weakening of America.” The federal lawmaker from Oshkosh says Ronald Reagan was correct in stating “You achieve Peace through strength.”  He points to the border crisis, deficit spending creating inflation, and surrendering Afghanistan as a few examples of why Russia feels emboldened. He says American weakness invites aggression by our enemies. Johnson is running for a third term in office this fall.

Only 36 fish were taken on Lake Winnebago during Day 5 of the sturgeon spearing season, but three of them weighed over 100 pounds. That included the biggest fish of the day a 133.7 pound female sturgeon that was 78 inches long caught by Maxwell Naparalla. Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources is anticipating a full 16-day season on the big lake. DNR staff observed fewer shacks on Lake Winnebago, and the overcast skies most likely impacted visibility and harvest rates for Wednesday. Overall 93 juvenile females, 285 adult females, and 248 males or a total or 626 sturgeon have been taken out of Lake Winnebago for the season.
