Sports for Wednesday
Johnny Davis scored 30 points, including the final 13 for No. 15 Wisconsin, and the Badgers boosted their Big Ten title chances with a 74-69 comeback victory over Indiana on Tuesday night. Davis was 10 of 15 from the field, 10 of 14 at the free-throw line and had 12 rebounds. Brad Davison added 21 points and seven boards for Wisconsin (20-5, 11-4).
Trayce Jackson-Davis had 30 points and eight rebounds for the Hoosiers (16-7, 7-8), who have lost four in a row. Race Thompson finished with 13 points and eight boards as Indiana blew a late lead for the second time this season against Wisconsin.
In a physical, back-and-forth game that featured a little bit of everything — hostile chants directed at Davison, even a brief scuffle between Davison and Hoosiers guard Parker Stewart — neither team could seize control.
But when Indiana took a 66-61 lead, it appeared the Hoosiers might end their four-game losing streak in this series. Instead, Davis took over, starting with a short runner and a free throw to make it a two-point game. He cut the deficit to one with two free throws with 40 seconds left and finally gave Wisconsin the lead with a three-point play with 61 seconds to go.
Ripon College 75 beat Lake Forest College 68. Jaylen Malone led the Red Hawks with 15 points while Ryan Steffes and David DeValk had 14 each. Frank Siegien led Lake Forest with 14. Ripon clinches a spot in 2022 Midwest Conference Tournament, which will be held February 25-26 at a site TBD.
On the women’s side, Ripon defeated Lake Forest College 80-55. Ripon clinches a share of fourth consecutive Midwest Conference Championship, and clinches spot in 2022 MWC Tournament.
Giannis Antetokounmpo scored a season-high 50 points, two off his career best, and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Milwaukee Bucks past the skidding Indiana Pacers 128-119 on Tuesday night.
The Bucks (36-23) swept the four-game season series from the Pacers and have won eight straight against their Central Division foe.
Antetokounmpo, who didn’t play in Milwaukee’s loss to Portland on Monday night because of a sore left ankle, showed no ill effects as he racked up 12 first-quarter points that included a pair of thunderous dunks and a 3-pointer. Antetokounmpo set a career high with his seventh 40-point game of the season and scored 50 for the first time since the memorable title-clinching game in the NBA Finals last season, which gave the Bucks their first championship in 50 years. He shot only 21 times from the field, the fourth fewest in league history when scoring 50 ponts.
Both teams had only 10 players available due to injuries.
Buddy Hield scored a season-high 36 points and former Oshkosh North star Tyrese Haliburton had 17 points and eight assists for Indiana.
The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Windy City Bulls 111-101. The Bulls led the entire game until the third quarter when the Herd took the lead 56-55. The Herd was up at the end of the third quarter 83-82. The two teams traded baskets until the Bulls ran away with a win by 10 points.
Terry Larrier led the Herd with 25 points while Wenyen Gabriel added a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Devon Dotson led the Bulls with 22 points followed by Tyler Cook with 21 points.
The Herd will play again on the road against Raptors 905 on Thursday, February 17 with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
Slovakia stunned Team USA in their Olympic men’s ice hockey quarterfinal, tying the game at 2-2 in the final minute of regulation and then eliminating the tournament’s top seed in a shootout on Wednesday in Beijing. Former Boston Bruins winger Peter Cehlarik scored the lone goal of the shootout on Slovakia’s fourth attempt, beating U.S. goalie Strauss Mann (34 saves). The U.S. was unsuccessful on all five shots against Slovakia goalie Patrik Rybar (33 saves), including the final attempt by captain Andy Miele.
The U.S. men’s ice hockey team leaves Beijing without a medal, making this three straight Olympics without one. Their last Winter Games hardware was the silver medal they won in Vancouver in 2010. They haven’t won gold since the “Miracle on Ice” of 1980.
The Winter Olympics continue in Beijing. Norway continues to lead in gold medals with 13 and total medals with 28. The ROC is second with 23 total medals while Germany is next with 20. The U.S. is fourth with 19 total medals including eight gold, seven silver and four bronze.
