Fox River Mall Shooter Sentenced
The teen charged in a fatal shooting at the Fox River Mall last January has been sentenced to 40 years in prison and 25 years of extended supervision. Eighteen-year-old Dezman Ellis of Oshkosh was sentenced in Outagamie County court yesterday on second degree intentional homicide and first degree recklessly endangering safety charges. Ellis shot and killed 19-year-old Jovanni Frausto and injured another person during a dispute at the mall on January 31st, 2021. Frausto’s family pleaded with the judge for a maximum sentence. But a plea agreement last November dropped a first degree intentional homicide charge down to second degree intentional homicide so instead of facing life in prison Ellis faced a maximum of 40 years in prison with the possibility of getting out on parole in 20 years.
Neosho Bank Robbery Suspect Charged
Bond has been set at $250,000 cash for a 43-year-old Columbus man suspected of robbing a branch of the Horicon Bank in the Village of Neosho last week. Alan Schade made his initial appearance in Dodge County court Monday where he was charged with four felonies; 1 count of robbery of a financial institution and 3 counts of bail jumping. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for February 10th. According to the criminal complaint last Wednesday Schade handed a teller at the bank a note demanding money and saying no one would get hurt if it was placed in the bag the teller was given. The teller placed the money in the bag including “bait money” with documented serial numbers. Schade was out on bond from a Waukesha County case and as part of the bond conditions was wearing a GPS ankle monitor. Data from the monitor placed him in the bank at the time of the robbery and at a bank in Ixonia that was robbed two days before that.

COVID 19 Vaccine Developments
Pfizer is asking the U.S. to authorize extra-low doses of its COVID-19 vaccine for children under 5. That could open the way for the youngest Americans to start receiving shots as early as March. The Food and Drug Administration is urging the drug maker and its partner BioNTech to apply earlier than the companies had planned and before it’s settled if the youngsters will need two or three shots. The nation has 19 million children under 5 who are the only group not yet eligible for vaccination against the coronavirus. Meanwhile the FDA has granted its full approval of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine will now be marketed under the name Spikevax for the prevention of COVID-19 in people 18 years of age and older.
Dallman Backs Bill Making Restaurant Grants Tax Exempt
State Representative Alex Dallman recently joined his Assembly colleagues in passing a bill, which requires an income and franchise tax exemption for restaurant owners who received a Restaurant Revitalization Fund grant. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says the fund has been crucial for restaurants to stay in business and retain their employees during the pandemic. He says their simply following up on the federal government move to make the funds tax exempt. He says it would make things even worse by taxing those emergency lifelines. Fifteen percent of Wisconsin restaurants have permanently closed since the beginning of the pandemic and thousands of others continue to try to navigate COVID-19 restrictions.
Infertility Not An Issue With COVID Vaccine
A cardiologist with SSM Health’s Dale Michels Center for Heart and Vascular Care says there is no truth to concerns over COVID-19 vaccine causing infertility. Dr. Tadeo Balderrama of the center in Fond du Lac says in fact the first vaccine studies proved the opposite to be true. In the initial trials in the unvaccinated group there were no pregnancies, but in the vaccinated group there were multiple pregnancies. He says a more recent study from Boston University backs up those earlier trials. The study of 2,000 couples comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated men and women found the vaccine had no effect on the chances of conceiving a child. It did find that couples had a lower chance of conception if the male partner had been infected with COVID within 60 days it reduced fertility and the chance of getting pregnant.
