Sports for January 21st

The Packers continue to make some roster changes in preparation for Saturday’s divisional matchup against the 49ers at Lambeau Field.

Aaron Rodgers will have one of his favorite targets back, but the availability of his blind side protector is once again in question.  David Bakhtiari made his season debut against the Lions in week 17, but has just practiced twice since. Head coach Matt LaFleur has said they are taking it a day at a time as Bakhtiari works his way back from a torn ACL. Officially Bakhtiari was listed as questionable on the final injury report released Thursday.

Meanwhile the Packers officially activated Randall Cobb from injured reserve, making him available for Saturday’s playoff game against the 49ers.  Cobb tore a core muscle right before halftime against the Rams in week 12, and had surgery soon after. He has been back on the practice field for a couple weeks, and Rodgers has signaled the return of his friend and wide receiver for a while now. Activating Cobb was a needed roster move in order to have him take the field in game action.

The same move will need to be made for pass rushers Za’Darius Smith and Whitney Mercilus, who returned to practice earlier this week. LaFleur said if they are available that move would be made on Friday.

If tackle Billy Turner, who’s been out since suffering a knee injury against the Bears comes back, he would move in front of veteran Dennis Kelly.

You can hear all of the action Saturday beginning with the pregame at 5:00 and the kickoff at 7:15 on FM 102.3 FM, The Bug.

In Saturday’s first divisional game in the AFC it’s Cincinnati at Tennessee.

On Sunday in the NFC it’s the Rams at Tampa Bay and then Buffalo at Kansas City in the AFC divisional round.

The NFL fined Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott $25K on Thursday for comments the QB made following last Sunday’s wild-card loss to the 49ers, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

In the aftermath of Dallas’ season-ending 23-17 loss to the Niners, Prescott stated that he commended fans for voicing their displeasure for the game’s officiating by throwing garbage in the direction of players and officials as they left the field.

The final sequence of Sunday’s contest saw Prescott take an inadvertent bump from umpire Ramon George as he was trying to spot the ball during the game’s final seven seconds following a 17-yard Prescott run. The play clock would expire before Dallas could snap the ball. Prescott initially called the display “sad” as he believed only the players were being targeted for falling short. He then pivoted his stance after a member of the media told him the vitriol was meant for the referees, saying, “Credit to them then. Credit to them.”

Prescott tweeted the following explanation and apology for his remarks on Tuesday:

“I deeply regret the comments I made regarding the officials after the game on Sunday. I was caught up in the emotion of a disappointing loss and my words were uncalled for and unfair.”

In the NBA tonight the Bucks are hosting the Chicago Bulls. Milwaukee is coming off at 126-114 victory Wednesday night over the Memphis Grizzlies.  The Bucks (28-19) have slipped to 4th in the Eastern Conference, but they’re just two games behind the first-place Bulls (28-15).

The Badgers are back in action tonight as they host #14 Michigan State.  The 8th ranked Badgers, (15-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten.  Wisconsin escaped with an 82-76 win over Northwestern Tuesday night as Johnny Davis scored 27 and three other players were in double figures for the Badgers.

Rpon College (10-5 and 6-0 in conference play) is at Grinnell.

UW-River Falls is at UW-Oshkosh.  The Titans are 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

The Packers are declaring January 21 “Green and Gold Friday” and encouraging fans to wear Packers gear or anything green and gold (check your workplace or school dress rules). Johnsonville Tailgate Village in Lambeau Field’s east parking lot hosts a celebration Friday starting at 4 p.m. with festivities and giveaways leading up to a pep rally at 6 P.M. Sign up in advance at http://packers.com/pass to be entered to win autographed prizes and Packers Pro Shop gift cards, then have your Packers Pass scanned at the event to see if you’ve won (you must be present to win, but signing up does not guarantee admission to the pep rally).

The Packers are encouraging kids and adults to send letters to players and the team this week through the “Letters to Lambeau” program. Selected letters and drawings will be featured on the official Packers website. Download templates for letters at pckrs.com/letters and email them to letterstolambeau@packers.com.

Sacramento Kings star Tyrese Haliburton is set to have his Oshkosh North High School jersey retired and be inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame Friday night. The ceremony is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the school’s fieldhouse. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets or pre-registration are required, but face masks must be worn. The ceremony is also set to be streamed live. Haliburton starred on the Spartans team that won the 2018 WISS Division 1 state championship. He played two years at Iowa State before being selected 12th overall in the 2020 NBA draft. Haliburton leads the Kings with 7.1 assists and 1.7 steals in 43 games.

Meanwhile, before Haliburton’s Kings take on the Milwaukee Bucks at Fiserv Forum Saturday night, Oshkosh North will take on Hortonville in Milwaukee. Tipoff of the high school game is set for 12:20 p.m. Fans who want to attend must have a ticket for that night’s Bucks-Kings game.
