Sports for January 12th
The Packers activated tackle Billy Turner from the COVID-19 reserve list on Tuesday. Turner started 13 games at right tackle this year, but missed the final four games of the regular season after suffering a knee injury against the Chicago Bears on December 12th. He was also out for last Sunday’s game due to being placed on the COVID-19 list on January 3rd.
Veteran tackle Dennis Kelly filled in for Turner during the final four games of the regular season. Head coach Matt LaFleur said Turner could return to the practice field this week, but would have a better update on Wednesday. Turner was the last player remaining on the COVID-19 reserve list for the Packers.
Aaron Rodgers disputed a claim that he would boycott the Super Bowl in protest of COVID-19 testing on the Pat McAfee show Tuesday. Last week Boomer Esiason said on his radio show that a source, who was close to Rodgers, said the quarterback would boycott the Super Bowl because of COVID testing; Rodgers said yesterday that he didn’t know where that came from but that it was absolutely false and ridiculous.
Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett may not go that far from Green Bay. That’s after the Chicago Bears requested to interview him for their head coach opening. Chicago parted ways with head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace on Monday. Rather than waiting to fill their GM position first, the Bears are moving full steam ahead with their coaching search. That includes asking to interview Hackett, who is becoming a hot name during this hiring cycle. Both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos have requested to interview Hackett with the Jaguars meeting set for this Friday, according to reports. Denver has also asked to speak with Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy, according to a report by the NFL Network. Getsy is on his second stint with the Packers after being hired as the quarterbacks coach by Matt LaFleur in 2019. He was also worked for previous head coach Mike McCarthy as an assistant between 2014-17, and had a brief stint as Mississippi State’s offensive coordinator before his return to Green Bay.
The Green Bay Packers have threatened legal action against the state of Wisconsin and city of Green Bay if they go along with a proposal that would change the ownership dynamic for Lambeau Field. A spokesperson for the team and the lawmaker proposing the change spoke at a city finance committee meeting Tuesday evening. The Packers may play in Lambeau Field, but the organization doesn’t own it. It leases it from the city of Green Bay and the stadium district. The Packers are threatening consequences if that dynamic changes.
The proposal is from Republican State Rep. David Steffen of Howard. He wants to eliminate the stadium district and transfer its responsibilities to the city of Green Bay. Steffen says the stadium district’s obligations ended in 2015, when the county sales tax stopped being collected for the 2003 renovation and future upkeep of Lambeau.
Steffen believes the city’s elected body would be better suited to carry out the stadium lease obligations, rather than the appointed, 7-member, stadium district board. The stadium district currently has about $81 million built up to help repay the Packers each year for maintenance expenses. Steffen’s proposal liquidates that fund, including sending $700 checks to Brown County property owners. Steffen claims, with the lease potentially running until 2043, about $280 million in additional revenue will be generated through a ticket tax.
Steffen admits his projections would have the city on the hook to make up a deficit for five years in repaying the Packers for maintenance and upkeep. Steffen says he would reconsider the distribution of the stadium district’s current reserve so the city wouldn’t have to worry about covering any potential deficits.
The Packers contend all money from the ticket tax is supposed to be for Lambeau upkeep. Both sides claim they’ve had lawyers confirm their analysis of the lease. As for the city, the discussion was for informational purposes only. Steffen says he doesn’t intend for his legislation to reach the governor this year, leaving more time for discussion and changes.
Greg Elliott had a career-high 25 points as Marquette beat DePaul 87-76 on Tuesday night. Elliott shot 4 for 6 from deep. Darryl Morsell had 16 points for Marquette (11-6, 3-3 Big East Conference). Justin Lewis added 11 points and three blocks. Oso Ighodaro had 11 points. Tyler Kolek had a career-high 10 assists plus five points. Marquette posted a season-high 27 assists. Javon Freeman-Liberty had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Demons (9-6, 0-5), who have now lost five games in a row. Yor Anei added 16 points and 11 rebounds. David Jones had seven rebounds.
The Wisconsin DNR is renewing its 3-year baiting and feeding ban in Oconto County after a wild deer tested positive for chronic wasting disease, the agency announced Tuesday. The one-year-old buck was shot in the Town of Underhill during the 2021 gun-deer season. The DNR says it’s the first case of CWD confirmed in a wild deer in that county. The DNR is also renewing a 2-year ban in Menominee County, since the deer was caught within 10 miles of the county line. It was also within 10 miles of Shawano County, but the DNR says that county is already under a longer baiting and feeding ban. The DNR is encouraging hunters that harvested an adult deer within 10 miles of Underhill to have the deer tested for CWD. An extended archery and crossbow hunt is still being offered in the county’s farmland zone through the end of January.
The Department of Natural Resources also announced two adult bucks in Monroe County, in western Wisconsin, tested positive for CWD. Both were harvested during the fall hunting season. They’re Monroe County’s first CWD cases confirmed in wild deer. A three-year baiting and feeding ban is in effect there as well.
The Green Bay Packers now know all of their opponents for the 2022 season. Since the Packers won the NFC North in 2021 they are slated to play the division winners in the NFC West and NFC South plus the winner of the AFC South as the 17th game which will be the Tennessee Titans. The NFC gets the extra home game this season after the AFC had it in 2021.
The home opponents for 2022 are the Bears, Lions, Vikings, Cowboys, Rams, Patriots, Giants, Jets and Titans.
The away opponents are the Bears, Lions, Vikings, Bills, Dolphins, Eagles, Buccaneers and Washington. The full NFL schedule with dates and kickoff times will be released in the spring.
Ripon College swept the weekly MWC Conference honors in basketball.
Ripon junior center David DeValk has been named Midwest Conference Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. In Ripon’s only game last week, DeValk recorded his third career double-double in an 81-70 win against Grinnell College. He finished with 21 points and career-highs of 16 rebounds and three assists, while shooting 56 percent (9-16) from the field.
DeValk currently leads the conference in field goals percentage (.625), while ranking second in the league in rebounding (8.4 rpg) and 17th in scoring (12.3 ppg).
Ripon junior forward Alison Leslie has been named Midwest Conference Performer of the Week Monday, as released by the conference office. Leslie had a week to remember, leading Ripon to a pair of conference victories to keep the Red Hawks undefeated and atop the MWC standings.
In Ripon’s two games last week, Leslie averaged 29.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and one assist per game, while shooting 66 percent (19-29) from the field, including 65 percent (15-23) from 3-point range, while converting all six of her free throw attempts. In Saturday’s 80-72 win at Illinois College, Leslie broke single-game school records for both points (38) and 3-pointers (10).
Leslie currently leads all of the MWC in 3-point shooting (.412), while also ranking 10th in scoring (12.6 ppg).
