Johnny Davis had 26 points and nine rebounds and No. 23 Wisconsin defeated Iowa 87-78 on Thursday night in a game that featured two of the nation’s top three scorers. Wisconsin (12-2, 3-1 Big Ten) withstood a 27-point performance from Iowa’s Keegan Murray to win its fourth straight and snap the Hawkeyes’ four-game winning streak. Murray entered the night with a Division I-leading 24.5 points per game while Davis was third with 22.3 points per game. Davis was coming off a 37-point, 14-rebound performance in a 74-69 victory Monday at No. 3 Purdue, and Murray had 35 points and eight rebounds the same night in Iowa’s 80-75 win over Maryland.
On Thursday, they played to a virtual standoff, but Davis got more help from his teammates. Brad Davison scored 18 points, Tyler Wahl had 16, Steven Crowl had 12 and Chucky Hepburn 11 for Wisconsin, which shot 50%.
Jordan Bohannon and Kris Murray scored 12 each for Iowa (11-4, 1-3), which also got 10 from Patrick McCaffery.
Wisconsin is at Maryland on Sunday.
The Packers continue to practice for Sunday’s regular-season finale at Detroit against the Lions. Green Bay is 13-3 coming in while the Lions are 2-13-1. Head coach Matt LaFleur is going with his starters at least for a portion of the game. Defensive lineman Kenny Clark said the team is going in with the mindset of winning.
Meanwhile, David Bakhtiari, who tore his ACL in late December of 2020, is hoping to get some reps against Detroit. The possibility of his return is looking better, but it’s still day to day. Coach LaFleur said the three-time pro bowler and two-time first team All Pro left tackle has looked good in practice this week.
Wide receiver Davante Adams has a chance to break Jordy Nelson’s all-time team yards for receiving record that he set in 2014 with 1,519 yards. He comes into the Lions game with 1,498 yards, just 22 yards away from breaking the team record. The 8th year pro said it would mean a lot to be up there on the receiving list with Jordy.
Sunday’s game starts at noon and you can hear all of the action beginning with the pregame at 10:00 on FM 102.3, The Bug.
Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett says he plans to interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars about their head coaching vacancy next week. The Packers have clinched the NFC’s No. 1 seed and lone first-round playoff bye. That means they won’t be playing when the postseason begins next week. Hackett was the Jaguars’ quarterbacks coach from 2015-16 and offensive coordinator from 2016-18 before getting fired in the middle of the 2018 season. The Jaguars fired Urban Meyer on Dec. 16 and have been searching for his successor while interim head coach Darrell Bevell finishes up the season.
Week 18, the final weekend of the NFL regular season kicks off on Saturday with two games. The first game features Kansas City (11-5) at Denver (7-9) and in the second game, Dallas (11-5) is at Philadelphia (9-7).
The Bucks are back in action tonight playing the Nets in Brooklyn. Milwaukee is coming off a 117-111 home loss to the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night. The defending NBA champs were without coach Mike Budenholzer after he entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols. Giannis Antetokounmpo also sat out because of an illness unrelated to COVID-19. Grayson Allen, George Hill and Pat Connaughton also enterd protocols on Wednesday. Milwaukee enters the game at 25-15, good for third place in the Eastern Conference, 1 ½ games behind the Nets and 2 ½ games in back of the Bulls.
Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker is recovering from a health scare that featured a soaring white blood cell count and inflammation around his heart, which hospitalized him for two weeks and caused him to lose 25 pounds.
“I’m lucky,” Stricker told Wisconsin.Golf in a lengthy interview. “I’m feeling like things are going in the right direction. I’ve just got to give it time.”
The 54-year old Stricker said his heart was jumping in and out of rhythm from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. He said the inflammation is starting to abate and he’s able to start moving around. The Wisconsin native was cleared to take his family to Florida for the winter at the start of the week. Even so, he said his cardiologist told him it could be six months before he competes again.
