Sports for December 17th

The Packers have a new addition to the COVID-19 reserve list. On Thursday head coach Matt LaFleur said during his pre-practice press conference defensive lineman Kenny Clark would be going on the list.  Case numbers have been on the rise around the NFL this week, and Clark is the first member of the Packers to be added to the COVID-19 reserve.

Clark has proven to be a valuable part of the Packers defense this season with four sacks and 12 quarterback hits through the first 13 games.  He could be eligible to return, but would need two negative COVID-19 tests 24 hours apart.

The Packers continue to get ready for Sunday’s game in Baltimore against the Ravens. Offensive Coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said the Ravens defense always seems to be good and they’re always adding something new to their scheme.  As for the status of quarterback Lamar Jackson, who’s nursing an ankle injury, it most likely will be a game-time decision as to whether or not he’ll play.  If Jackson can’t go then Tyler Huntley would get the start.  Baltimore also signed veteran quarterback Josh Johnson from the Jets practice squad on Wednesday.

The pregame starts at 1:00 with the kickoff at 3:25 on FM 102.3, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football Kansas City won a wild one on the road beating the Los Angeles Chargers 34-28 in overtime.  Patrick Mahomes threw a game-winning 34 yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce to win it in a battle between the two best teams in the AFC West.  The Chiefs improve to 10-4 while the Chargers drop to 8-6.

In the NBA tonight the Bucks play at New Orleans.  Milwaukee is 19-11 and in second place in the Eastern Conference while the Pelicans come in at 9-21 in the Western Conference.

Freshman Anna Smrek recorded her 20th kill on match point and No. 4 Wisconsin beat top-seeded and previously unbeaten Louisville 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-9 on Thursday night in the NCAA women’s volleyball semifinals.

Wisconsin (30-3), playing in its third straight semifinal, advances to its fourth championship match on Saturday. The Badgers lost to Nebraska in 2000, Penn State in 2013 and Stanford in 2019.  Lauren Barnes led the defensive effort for Wisconsin with 19 digs. She was all over the court. Julia Orzol, the Big Ten freshman of the year, added nine kills and seven digs.

The Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, beat the Iowa Wolves, 131-117. The two teams traded baskets in the first quarter resulting in eight lead changes until the Herd scored to go up 12-11. The Iowa Wolves came within six points in the third quarter, but the Herd battled them off to keep their lead throughout the rest of the game. The Herd won by a season-high win margin of 14 points.

Lindell Wigginton led the Herd with a career-high 30 points and went 7/11 from the three-point line. Wenyen Gabriel posted a double-double with 23 points and a team-season high of 17 rebounds. Tremont Waters tied his season-high and the team’s season-high record of 12 assists.

The Iowa Wolves were led by Isaiah Miller with 30 points and Brian Bowen ll added 26 points.

The Wisconsin Herd secured a spot in the Showcase Cup by finishing in the top eight teams in the league in 12 games. They will play again in the Showcase Cup, a single elimination tournament, in Las Vegas starting on December 19th where the winner will receive $100,000.

The game was postponed from Wednesday night.
