Sports for December 16th

The Packers were back on the practice field Wednesday getting ready for Sunday’s game at Baltimore against the Ravens.  Quarterback Aaron Rodgers (toe), tight end Dominique Dafney (ankle), wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown (concussion) and guard/tackle Bill Turner (did) did not practice. Left tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) saw limited practice time as did running back Aaron Jones (knee) as well as wide receivers Malik Taylor (abdominal) and Marquez Valdes Scantling (back).  Punter Corey Bojorquez (left knee) was a full participant.

Meanwhile, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson missed practice because of his injured ankle, and the Baltimore Ravens are bringing in another quarterback just in case. Jets coach Robert Saleh announced that Josh Johnson was heading to Baltimore from New York’s practice squad. Ravens coach John Harbaugh discussed the acquisition before practice Wednesday. Jackson is day to day with an ankle injury, and the 35-year-old Johnson would give Baltimore a veteran backup if Tyler Huntley needs to start this weekend against Green Bay. Harbaugh also said during his talk with reporters that Jackson would not practice Wednesday, although the star quarterback remains a possibility to play this weekend. Jackson left Sunday’s loss at Cleveland with a sprained ankle. He was not available to reporters Wednesday the way he usually is.  Huntley also quarterbacked Baltimore to a win over Chicago when Jackson was sick. This week, he should have more time to prepare for the possibility that he might start.

The injury-plagued Ravens had several others miss practice Wednesday, including defensive tackle Calais Campbell (thigh), offensive lineman Tyre Phillips (illness), guard Ben Powers (foot), fullback Patrick Ricard (back/knee), tackle Alejandro Villanueva (knee), wide receiver Tylan Wallace (concussion) and cornerback Chris Westry (knee).

Baltimore did have tight end Nick Boyle (knee), offensive lineman Patrick Mekari (hand) and wide receiver Sammy Watkins (knee) at practice on a limited basis.

Meanwhile Aaron Rodgers broke Brett Favre’s touchdown record against the Bears on Sunday when he threw four touchdown passes.  While that meant a lot to the 17-year veteran, he was asked Wednesday what it would mean to him to break Favre’s team record of 442 touchdown passes.  He currently has 439.

In Thursday Night Football Kansas City is on the road playing the Los Angeles Chargers.  The Chiefs (9-4) are first place in the AFC West a game ahead of the Chargers (8-5).  The Chiefs won their first meeting 30-24 in week three.

The Jacksonville Jaguars fired head coach Urban Meyer late Wednesday night amid a turbulent and tumultuous first season for Meyer in the NFL.

Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell will be the interim head coach for the final four games of the regular season. Meyer, who was hired early this year to begin a new era in Duval, will finish 2-11 in his lone season at the helm.

Playing without stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, the Milwaukee Bucks leaned on Jrue Holiday and had a 21-0 fourth-quarter run to beat the Indiana Pacers 114-99 on Wednesday night.  Holiday had 26 points and 14 assists.

Tied at 87 after three quarters, Milwaukee surged ahead early in the fourth quarter with the big run. The Bucks raced to a 112-92 lead with just over three minutes left, with Pat Connaughton and Jordan Nwora each scoring eight points during the run. Both finished with 20 points.

Antetokounmpo, averaging 27 points, 11.6 rebounds and 5.8 assists, entered the league’s health and safety protocols list Tuesday. Middleton, averaging 17.8 points, exited with a hyperextended left knee late in the third quarter Monday night in Boston.

Domantas Sabonis had 16 points and 14 rebounds for Indiana. Caris LeVert scored 14 of Indiana’s first 20 points and finished with 16.   Milwaukee has won five of its last eight. It has won seven straight against Indiana. Indiana had won three of its previous four games, following a four-game losing streak. The Bucks play at New Orleans on Friday night.

Brad Davison scored 19 points before fouling out and Tyler Wahl scored 12 and Wisconsin needed a second-half run and then held on to beat Nicholls 71-68 on Wednesday night. Wisconsin (9-2) now leads all major Division-I level programs with three victories after trailing by double digits after halftime. The Badgers played without their leading scorer Johnny Davis (20.9 ppg) due to non-related COVID-19 illness.  Ty Gordon missed a 3-pointer from the right baseline with three seconds to go with the Colonels down three. Manny Littles grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled on the put-back attempt. He missed both free throws and Wisconsin secured the rebound for the win. Gordon scored 26 points for Nicholls (7-4).
