Deer Harvest Totals Down For Gun Deer Season

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials say the preliminary totals are in for the 9-day gun-deer hunt and the harvest for the 2021 season was down 7.9 percent from last year. A total of 175,667 deer were taken with 84,952 antlered and 90,715 antlerless deer taken by hunters. Department officials also say 564,440 licenses were bought for the gun-deer season. Six hunters suffered gun-shot wounds during the season. Those accidents occurred in Waukesha, Juneau, Iron and Marathon counties and Door County had two accidental shootings. The accident in Iron County was fatal. It occurred when a 65-year-old man was shot in the chest. Another hunter was moving and knocked over a gun that went off when it hit the ground. The victim died at the scene.
