Ripon Common Council Approves Changes For Redistricting

Ripon’s Common Council this week approved the amending of two ordinances to accommodate redistricting previously approved by the county board. The ordinances are necessary to accommodate the changing of boundary lines for the city aldermanic wards. City Administrator Adam Sonntag told the council a few people will find themselves in different wards when it comes to voting in the city council elections. City Clerk Ann Schommer said those who are affected by the change will receive letters notifying them that they now are in different wards.

FDL County Board Approves Purchase For Sex Offender Housing

Fond du Lac County supervisors Tuesday night unanimously approved spending $150,000 to purchase a double-wide housing unit to house sexually violent offenders. The unit will be on the County Highway Department grounds in Fond du Lac. The money for the purchase will come out of the County’s General Fund. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says it’s a great location for the housing unit. He says his deputies are in and out of the location all day long refueling their vehicles, getting maintenance done to their squad cars. It is also the location for the Sheriff’s shooting range and impound building. County Supervisor Tom Dornbrook, who is also the Campbellsport Police Chief, told the board it was the safest option the county has for housing violent sex offenders. Over the years the county and its communities have had numerous battles with the state over the placement of sex offenders.

Fox River Mall Shooting Suspect Reaches Plea Agreement

The teen charged in a fatal shooting at the Fox River Mall last January has pleaded to two charges. A plea deal for 18-year-old Dezman Ellis lowered one of the charges from first degree intentional homicide to second degree intentional homicide while a first degree reckless endangering safety charge remained the same. The reduced charge means instead of facing life in prison Ellis could get 40 years in prison and possibly be out in 20 years. Ellis made the pleas in Outagamie County court Wednesday. A sentencing date is scheduled for February 1st. Ellis killed Jovanni Frausto and injured another person during a dispute at the mall on January 31st

FDL Man Arrested For Trying To Carry Handgun On Plane In Florida

A 50-year-old Fond du Lac man was jailed in Key West, Florida Monday after a loaded gun was found in his carry-on luggage at the Keywest International Airport. Jeffrey Allen Hefter’s backpack went through the X-ray at the airport and the Transportation Security Administration saw an image of what looked like a handgun. A search of the bag did indeed find a handgun with a loaded magazine and round in the chamber. There was a second magazine as well. Hefter was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in a prohibited area. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says he possesses a concealed carry permit for Wisconsin, but officials couldn’t confirm if it was valid or extended to carry-on baggage.

Battling CWD By Providing More Dumpsters For Deer Carcass Disposal

With a wild deer testing positive for Chronic Wasting Disease in Fond du Lac County the DNR will try to provide more dumpsters for carcass disposal this gun-deer season. James Christopoulos is a wildlife biologist working out of the DNR’s Horicon office. He says the deer that tested positive had been sick and likely hit by a vehicle, but it hadn’t been there too long and was placed in a landfill after its discovery. He says deer carcasses left in the field to rot can spread CWD if they are there too long. He says adopt-a-dumpster programs and partnering with waste disposal companies helps provide more dumpsters for the disposal of deer carcasses. He notes they do have dumpsters for carcass disposal at the Eldorado Learning Center, the Horicon Offices and in Princeton.

Ripon Education Appreciation

Both the outgoing and interim presidents of Ripon College say they appreciate the type of education the Ripon Area School District is offering students from kindergarten through high school. His kids have been taught in the Ripon School District and he says he appreciates that teachers there teach day in and day out. Andrea Young will serve as interim President of Ripon College while a national search is conducted for the college’s next president. Her son attends kindergarten at the Barlow Park Charter School and she serves on the Governance Council for the charter school. She says what he’s learning know sets the tone for his future education and the school is doing a wonderful job.

Rodgers Comments About Being Immunized Misleading

A member of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says as a high profile sports figure Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers should have been more responsible back in August when he was asked whether or not he had been vaccinated for COVID-19. Rodgers said at the time he had been “immunized.” Rodgers sat out of last Sunday’s game against Kansas City after testing positive for the coronavirus. Task Force member Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says Rodger’s comment about being “immunized” was deceiving and as a role-model he should have been more forthcoming.  Puhlmann-Becker says on the other hand reporters who were in the room with Rodgers in August should have pressed him about if by saying he had been “immunized” he meant he had been vaccinated. Rodger has since taken responsibility for being misleading.
