FDL County Board Preview
The Fond du Lac County Board has a full agenda for tonight’s meeting but two of the more interesting items they will consider are for purchases. One would allow the county to purchase a temporary housing unit for the placement of sexually violent offenders that would be placed on the former county highway garage site in Fond du Lac. The other involves the purchase of 54.3 acres on Scott Road in the Town of Fond du Lac for $27,000 an acre. It would be used for the future construction of a county jail and other public safety facilities. That works out to over $1.4 million. The current county jail is somewhat land-locked. The board meets at 6 pm at the City-County Government Center in Fond du Lac.
Ballweg Bill Signed Into Law
A bill State Senator Joan Ballweg of Markesan and State Representative Todd Novak of Dodgeville authored that adds information related to the state’s SafeHaven law to high school health classes was recently signed into law. The Safe Haven law allows parents to safely relinquish their newborn children to police officers, emergency responders or hospitals without legal consequences, so long as the child is less than 72 hours old. Ballweg says the legislation is in response to the murder of newborn baby in Green County earlier this year. She says when emotions are high the legislation provides those young parents another option to consider. The legislation does not mandate that school boards have to offer the information as curriculum, but states if they do offer human growth and development courses, the information be added.

The Ripon Area Fire District, Ripon Ace Hardware, and Roadhouse Pizza teamed up this past Saturday to promote the use of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the home. It coincided with the time change when people are reminded to change the batteries in their detectors or get new ones if they don’t work. The fire department delivered pizzas with random orders and they were free if the home had working detectors. If not the homes were supplied with free batteries or detectors courtesy of Ripon Ace Hardware. Fire Chief Tim Saul says it is one of their most popular promotions and a good way to remind people that working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors could save your life.
Those Who Have Had COVID Do Build Up Some Immunity
The CDC says people who have had COVID-19 do develop some natural immunity to the disease, but are less likely to find the same protection as someone who has been fully vaccinated. Jeff Puhlmann-Becker of the Ripon Community COVID-19 Task Force says the CDC found those who have had COVID-19 but haven’t been vaccinated are five times more likely to develop the disease than those who have been fully vaccinated. He says on the other hand if you’ve had COVID-19, have been fully vaccinated against it and received the booster your chances of getting the virus again are very slim. He still doesn’t recommend trying to get infected to build up natural immunity, but getting fully vaccinated and the booster instead.
