Sports for October 28th

Thursday Night Football features the Packers on the road at Arizona.   The Cardinals (7-0) are the only undefeated team left in the NFL while the Packers (6-1) have won six straight since their season-opening loss to the Saints.

Head coach Matt LaFleur recognizes tonight’s game is a huge challenge.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers says the game also has playoff implications

The Packers will be without the services of wide receivers Davante Adams and Allen Lazard, who were placed on the injured/COVID 19 list earlier in the week.  Cornerback Kevin King and pass rusher Preston Smith were both listed as questionable for Thursday’s game.

The Packers officially will be without the services of defensive coordinator Joe Barry which means his responsibilities will be shared between defensive backs/passing game coordinator Jerry Gray and inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti.  Gray says the biggest challenge for the defense will be trying to stop Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals will be without one of their biggest stars as they take on the Packers in prime time with J.J. Watt being ruled out for the game. Watt was listed as “did not participate” on all three days leading up to the Thursday night game due to a shoulder injury. It’s the first game Watt will miss with Arizona after signing with the Cardinals this past offseason. In seven games this season Watt has just one sack, but 10 quarterback hits. The Wisconsin native and Badgers alum has played against the Packers just twice in his career. Watt’s best game against his home state team came in 2012 when he had two sacks and three quarterback hits, but Green Bay got the victory over a previously undefeated Texans team.

Arizona could also be without star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins against Green Bay. Cardinals’ head coach Kliff Kingsbury said on Wednesday Hopkins would be a game time decision due to a hamstring injury.

You can hear all of the action tonight beginning with the pregame at 5:00 and the kickoff at 7:20 on FM 102.3, The Bug.

D’Angelo Russell scored 29 points, Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards each added 25, and the Minnesota Timberwolves held off the short-handed Milwaukee Bucks 113-108 on Wednesday night. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 40 points and 16 rebounds for the Bucks, who were without point guard Jrue Holiday and center Brook Lopez. The Bucks, who trailed 94-79 entering the final period, pulled within 110-108 on Antetokounmpo’s layup with 9.4 seconds remaining. Edwards answered with two free throws. Jarred Vanderbilt, making his first start of the season, had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Timberwolves. Khris Middleton scored 16 points and Grayson Allen had 13 for the Bucks.

Minnesota had lost six straight against the Bucks and hadn’t won at Milwaukee since the 2013-14 season. Edwards’ free throw put Minnesota up 106-92 with 5:20 left, but the Bucks responded with a 10-2 run, cutting the lead to 108-102 on George Hill’s 3-pointer with 1:59 remaining. The Timberwolves never trailed, leading 44-34 after one quarter and 66-58 at the half. Minnesota used a 9-2 run midway through the third quarter to push the lead to 82-69. Minnesota made 17 of 25 shots in the first quarter, including 6 of 10 from beyond the arc.  The Bucks host San Antonio on Saturday.

The Houston Astros evened up the World Series at a game-apiece with a 7-2 win over the Braves Wednesday night.  Houston opened up with a run in the first inning and then after Atlanta tied it up in the top of the second, the Astros scored four more in their half of the inning. Jose Altuve homered for the Astros.  Jose Urquidy picked up the win while Braves starter Max Freid took the loss.  Game three is Friday night in Atlanta.

The NFL has approved a potential stock sale for the Green Bay Packers, according to the team. The money would be used on improvements and renovations at Lambeau Field. The last Packers stock sale was in 2011-2012.  The Packers say any stock offering would have to go through “regulatory hurdles” before it becomes a reality.  The Packers are a publicly-owned team. The “stock” sold by the team does not constitute an investment that earns the buyer money. Shareholders do not receive a dividend.

The Mississippi auditor says retired NFL player Brett Favre has repaid the welfare money he accepted for scheduled speeches where he didn’t show up. Auditor Shad White says Favre paid $600,000 this week. The former Green Bay Packers quarterback still owes $228,000 in interest.  Favre received $1.1 million and repaid the first $500,000 in May 2020. He said he did not know the money came from welfare funds.
