Rollover Accident In Waupaca County

Waupaca County Sheriff’s officials say one person was injured Saturday morning in a rollover accident on Highway 10. The vehicle was heading east when it entered the median and rolled over crossing the westbound lanes of traffic. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was flown to a hospital in Neenah. Multiple 911 calls reported the accident at 12:20 Saturday morning. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Weyauwega Police and Fire Departments, Fremont Fire and Ambulance, Gold Cross Ambulance, and the ThedaStar helicopter.

Horicon Council Cleared

The Horicon City Council has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the actions they took to disband the Horicon Police and Fire Commission. In early April members of the disbanded PFC brought a formal complaint to Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt asking him to investigate the possibility of open meeting violations and misconduct in office. The Sheriff’s Office found no violation of the law but passed along their findings to the District Attorney’s Office for review.  In declining to prosecute Dodge County Managing Attorney Bob Barrington said the city council had the authority to disband the PFC and properly followed the legal advice of their city attorney. The accusations of open meeting violations stemmed from among other things email exchanges involving elected officials. The city council’s vote to disband the PFC came after a disagreement with the PFC on the hiring procedures to replace former Police Chief Joel Adamson who retired in April.

COVID Vaccine Boosters Increases Immunity

Approval has been given to mix and match COVID-19 vaccines for booster shots, but just getting a COVID-19 booster shot no matter what brand will multiply your immunity to the virus. Jeff Puhlmann Becker says a study showed that getting a booster shot will increase your immunity but it varied by brand. A Johnson & Johnson booster increases your immunity by four times. If you got Pfizer it increases it by 35 times and by 74 times for Moderna. For Johnson & Johnson you have to wait until two months after you got the original shot to get a booster shot. For Pfizer and Moderna you have to wait at least six months.  Meanwhile Pfizer reports its vaccine for 5 to 11 year old kids is 91 percent effective. Vaccine for children in that age bracket will become available in early November.

Pay Increases Were Really Incentive Payments

Fond du Lac County Executive Al Buechel says quarterly bonus payments and premium pay increases approved by the County Board for dispatchers; county correctional officers, and Sheriff’s staff sergeants and lieutenants were really part of an incentive pay program.  He says it is becoming more difficult to retain and attract those types of workers so they would like to keep the ones they have. Those pay increases and quarterly bonus payments will be funded by monies the country received through the American Rescue Plan Act. He says the federal government allows that, but after 3 years the county will have to find a different way of funding that. Some board members had concerns about approving the pay increases when other employees for the county were not getting them too.

Drug Drop Boxes

Over 270 law enforcement agencies participated in a Drug Take Back Day Saturday by accepting old and unused prescription drugs from residents. Quite a few police departments have permanent drug drop boxes including the Ripon Police Department. Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says they’ve moved theirs inside the lobby at City Hall because they no longer have dispatchers on site 24 hours a day, which also means they’ve limited hours for the drop offs. They accept drop offs Monday through Fridays from 7:30 am to 4 pm. They do ask that people place their pills in plastic sandwich bags before they put them in the box or use the bags the department provides on site.  Sharps will not be accepted. Most police departments in Fond du Lac County have drug drop boxes. There are also drug drop boxes at the hospitals in Fond du Lac, Ripon and Waupun.
