Oshkosh Community Band To Perform

16 October 2021 News

OSHKOSH — The Oshkosh Area Community Band will present an Autumn Pops Concert at 7 p.m.Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Alberta Kimball Auditorium, 375 N. Eagle St., at Oshkosh West High School.

The concert will include marches, music from the stage and screen, dance music and light classics. “American Riversongs,” by Wisconsin composer Pierre La Plante, will be featured. This composition is based on traditional and composed music from an earlier time, when the rivers and waterways were the lifelines of a growing nation.

“I’m Dreaming of Home” is from the movie “Joyeux Noël” (”Merry Christmas”). Released in 2005, the World War I film is based on the Christmas truce of December 1914, depicted through the eyes of soldiers who took part. The song is a tender ballad sung by soldiers that articulates their dreams during the time they were spending Christmas in a war zone far from home.

“Dreamsong,” by Richard Saucedo, will feature Marshall Potter as the piano soloist with the band. Associate conductor Jon Basten will conduct this piece that is an atmospheric delight.

Selections from the Broadway play “Sweeney Todd,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and arranged by Stephen Bulla, will feature colorful songs from the urban legend of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, created by one of Broadway’s top composers.

Dance songs and marches round out the pops concert with tunes to get toes tapping. Included are “Belle of the Ball,” by Leroy Anderson, and “The Gladiator,” by John Philip Sousa.

David Berndt (pictured ) is the director of the band. Terry Hathaway is music director emeritus.

As we maneuver through this lingering pandemic, band members will play with bell coverings on their instruments. Patrons are asked to wear masks and maintain physical distancing as per theater policy. The concert will run about 60 minutes. The concert is free, and donations will be accepted at the door.
