Sports for October 14th

The Packers returned to the practice field Wednesday in preparation for Sunday’s game in Chicago against the Bears.  It will be the 203rd meeting between the two most storied franchises in NFL history. While the Packers have had two quarterbacks since early 1992, Justin Fields will become the 20th starting quarterback for the Bears in the last 30 years.  Also Aaron Rodgers has never lost to a rookie starting quarterback in the NFC North.

One area of concern for Green Bay is the failure to score touchdowns in the Red Zone, scoring only 11 times in 20 trips.  Coach Matt LaFleur isn’t concerned, saying his team will turn it around in the red zone. In fact according to LaFleur the correction starts with the play caller, himself.  Green Bay can go a long ways towards addressing their red zone woes if they can get tight end Robert Tonyan and Davante Adams going in terms of touchdowns. Last season they combined for 29, but have just three at the start of 2021.

As for the defense, right now the Packers sit at the bottom of the league as the only team in the NFL yet to come up with a red zone stop. That’s with opponents converting on all 13 trips into the red zone this season, and 16 straight dating back to the previous postseason.

On the injury front two Packers on the offensive line were back at practice Wednesday: LT Elgton Jenkins and C Josh Myers.  CB Kevin King was not practicing, though coach Matt LaFleur said he will give the corner the week to see if he can give it a go against the Bears. There were also two roster moves as: WR Equanimeous St. Brown and CB Quinnen Dunbar were added to the active roster.

Sunday’s game begins at noon from Soldier Field with the pregame starting at 10:00. You can hear all of the action on FM 1023, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football Tampa Bay (4-1) plays at Philadelphia (2-3).

In the NLDS tonight, it’s the deciding game five between the Dodgers and Giants in San Francisco.  The American League Championship begins Friday night as the Boston Red Sox play the Astros in Houston.

The WIAA released the high school girl’s volleyball brackets and five area teams received #1 seeds.
