Sports for October 12th

Joc Pederson kept enhancing his “Joctober” nickname with a three-run, pinch-hit homer and the Atlanta Braves shut down Milwaukee once again, beating the Brewers 3-0 on Monday to take a 2-1 edge in the NL Division Series. In a matchup dominated by pitching, Ian Anderson and the Braves bullpen combined on a five-hitter and won by a 3-0 score for the second straight game.Atlanta can try to reach its second straight NL Championship Series when it hosts Game 4 on Tuesday.

Pederson’s homer in the fifth inning was his second of the series. Each drive came as a pinch-hitter against Adrian Houser. Pederson singled as a pinch-hitter in his only other at-bat in this series, and has driven in four of Atlanta’s seven runs. Pederson has hit 11 postseason home runs overall and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series last year with his longballs. Since winning the opening game of the series, the NL Central champion Brewers have not scored in 19 consecutive innings. They were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position in this loss.

Anderson was dominant for the NL East champion Braves, allowing three hits over five innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Will Smith, the fourth Braves reliever, pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the series.

Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta pitched four scoreless innings and was pulled for a pinch-hitter when the Brewers threatened in the fifth. Houser gave up singles to Travis d’Arnaud and Swanson to open the fifth. Pederson, hitting for Anderson, pulled a high fastball deep into the right-field seats for a 3-0 lead.

Adam Duvall made a crucial baserunning mistake when he tried to advance from first to second as Austin Riley tried to score from third on d’Arnaud’s flyball in the second. Left fielder Christian Yelich nailed Duvall for the third out before Riley crossed the plate, costing Atlanta a run.

Milwaukee center fielder Lorenzo Cain, running at full speed, crashed into the wire fence as he tried to catch Duvall’s drive in the fourth. Cain held the ball in his glove before hitting the ground and losing control. Cain stayed down as Duvall raced to third with the two-out triple. Cain remained in the game after a visit from manager Craig Counsell and a trainer. Peralta struck out Eddie Rosario to end the inning.

The Brewers hit only .183 in the first two games of the series, including a 3-0 loss in Game 2. Counsell made one lineup change, inserting Luis Urías at third base for Eduardo Escobar. The Brewers couldn’t score in the fifth after putting runners on second and third with no outs. Urías, hit by a pitch, moved to third on a double by Omar Narváez.

Anderson escaped when Cain’s sharp grounder was stopped by a diving Swanson, who held the baserunners before throwing to first. Urías was caught in a rundown on pinch-hitter Daniel Vogelbach’s grounder to third base, and Kolten Wong lined out to Freddie Freeman at first base to end the inning.

Swanson turned an acrobatic double play to end the eighth after Luke Jackson walked Jace Peterson and gave up a one-out single to Willy Adames.

Milwaukee and Atlanta have not announced starting pitchers for Game 4 on Tuesday. First pitch is at 4:15 CDT and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In the other NLCS game Monday the Giants edged the Dodgers 1-0 and lead their series 2-1.  They play again tonight in Los Angeles.

In the ALCS Boston edged Tampa Bay 6-5 to win their series 3-1.  Wednesday the White Sox play at Houston with the Astros leading 2-1.

The Packers have the day off today before starting to practice Wednesday for the game Sunday at Soldier Field against the Bears.  Green Bay (4-1) has won four straight while the Bears are 3-2.

The Packers injury woes continue as cornerback Kevin King left Sunday’s game against the Bengals with a shoulder injury.  Coach Matt La Fleur said more will be known on his status Wednesday.  He was also asked if there are things that can help Mason Crosby in the kicking game.   La Fleur said there are some areas that need to be corrected but that all of the blame was not Crosby’s.

In Monday Night Football it was another wild game to end week five as the Ravens won at home in overtime over the Indianapolis Colts 31-25.  Trailing 22-9 entering the fourth quarter, the Ravens finally got their offense going and tied the game with a touchdown and two-point conversion to send the game into overtime.  Baltimore won the toss and took no time marching down the field as quarterback Jamar Jackson threw a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marquise Brown to win it.  It was Brown’s second touchdown catch of the game. The Colts last two attempts at a field goal came up empty in the fourth quarter with the first one being blocked and then a 41-yarder by Rodrigo Blankenship with :39 seconds left was wide left to finish off a terrible weekend for kickers in the league.  Jackson was 37-43 for 442 yards and four touchdowns and also led Baltimore in rushing with  62 yards on 14 carries.   His counterpart on the Colts, Carson Wentz, was 35-45 for 402 yards and two touchdowns. The Ravens improve to 4-1 while the Colts fall to 1-4.

Following recent articles in The Wall Street Journal and New York Times detailing the use of racist, homophobic and misogynistic terms by Jon Gruden in emails reportedly dating back to 2010, Gruden has resigned as Las Vegas Raiders head coach, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday night. Gruden was five games into the fourth season of a 10-year contract with the franchise, for which he previously coached in a prior stint.

“I have resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders,” Gruden said in a statement, obtained by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. “I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction. Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”

Special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia has been named the Raiders’ interim head coach.

The resignation of Gruden, 58, comes three days removed from a report from the The Wall Street Journal that detailed a 2011 email in which he used a racial trope to describe NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith, who is Black, and less than two hours after the release of a New York Times article on Monday night that revealed Gruden used homophobic and misogynistic terms in other emails dating back to 2010.

Gruden spoke with Raiders owner Mark Davis on Monday to inform Davis of his decision to step down, Pelissero reported.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Jon Cooper to a three-year extension through the 2024-25 season, rewarding their coach after the team won consecutive Stanley Cup titles.

Cooper has been behind bench with the Lightning since March 2013, and the team has made five appearances in the Eastern Conference Final. It has played in the Stanley Cup Final three times over the past seven seasons.

CTooper coached the Green Bay Gamblers from 2008-10.

“Unequivocally, Coop is the best person for the job,” general manager Julien BriseBois said. “He is a great leader, spokesperson and ambassador for our organization. We are lucky to have him as our head coach and I very much look forward to our continued partnership.”

Cooper, the longest tenured coach in the NHL, has a 383-197-53 record in just over eight seasons with Tampa Bay. The Lightning won the 2020 Stanley Cup title in five games over the Dallas Stars. They repeated during the shortened 2021 season, defeating the Montreal Canadiens in five games.
