Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes will start Game 1 of the NLDS with the Atlanta Braves on Friday. The Brewers say Burnes will start the opening game and that right-hander Brandon Woodruff will start Game 2 on Saturday. The Braves are going with right-hander Charlie Morton for Game 1 and left-hander Max Fried for Game 2. Burnes led the NL in ERA this season and had 234 strikeouts and only 34 walks in 167 innings. Friday’s first pitch is at 3:37 p.m. and Saturday’s first pitch is at 4:07 p.m.
Perhaps the most surprising element of the Milwaukee Brewers’ run to the NL Central title is they won it without a typical season from Christian Yelich. The 2018 NL MVP missed much of the first half with a lower back strain and didn’t hit for much power upon his return. He’ll get a chance to make up for it as the Brewers seek their first World Series title, although he’s not so worried about his own personal fresh start.
Boston knocked the Yankees out of the playoffs after a 6-2 Wild Card game victory Tuesday night in Boston. Nathan Eovaldi fired 5 1/3 tremendous innings on only 71 pitches, allowing four hits and a run while walking none and striking out eight to pick up the win. Xander Bogaerts got the Red Sox started in the first with a two-run homer off New York’s Gerrit Cole and Kyle Schwarber hit a solo shot in the third. Anthony Rizzo got the Yankees on the board with a solo homer in the top of the sixth but the Red Sox picked up a run in the bottom half. Boston scored its final two runs in the seventh and New York’s Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo homer in the ninth to finish out the scoring. Cole last just two innings and took the loss. Boston plays the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday night at Tropicana Field in game one of the American League Divisional Series.
The National League Wild Card game is later this afternoon as St. Louis plays the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Cardinals send Adam Wainwright against Dodgers right-hander Max Scherzer.
After an off-day Tuesday the Packers are back on the practice field today getting ready for Sunday’s matchup in Cincinnati against the Bengals. Both teams are 3-1. Both teams are coming off victories this past Sunday as the Packers won at home over the Steelers 27-17 while the Bengals won at home over Jacksonville 24-21.
Meanwhile quarterback Aaron Rodgers was asked on the Pat McAffee Show Tuesday about the officiating in the league which has received more criticism. Rodgers said it’s a tough job and doesn’t believe there’s a problem. He said he loves the human aspect of the game. But he did say that reviews in the booth should be done by the best officials.
