Old Badge Mystery

6 October 2021 News

How a nearly 100-year-old Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s badge ended up in an old bank building in Oshkosh is a mystery the Sheriff’s Department doesn’t mind finding out more about. A moving company found it in an old wooden desk. The badge and a business card that accompanied it belonged to former Sheriff Arthur A. Briggs. Current Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt posted about the find on the Sheriff’s Facebook page. Briggs was the county’s 39th Sheriff and served in 1924 and 1925. The badge was inside a leather wallet and the business card accompanying it had a three digit phone number of 427 and listed an address for the Sheriff’s Office of 226 Linden Street in Fond du Lac. That is indeed the address for the old Sheriff’s Office and Jail, which is now an employee parking lot for the county. Sheriff Waldschmidt says it is a piece of history that will make a great addition to their historical display. (Photos courtesy Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department)
