Paul Goldschmidt homered twice, and the St. Louis Cardinals overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-5 Thursday and extend their longest winning streak in 39 years to 12 games. On a day Adam Wainwright faltered early, St. Louis trailed 5-0 before rallying with one run in the fifth, four in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth. The Cardinals moved five games ahead of Cincinnati and Philadelphia, who both played later Thursday, for the second NL wild card.
St. Louis began its winning streak by overcoming a four-run deficit against Cincinnati to win on Sept. 11th. The Cardinals are on their longest winning streak since April 11-24, 1982, and are two shy of the franchise record set in 1935. Milwaukee has lost five in a row since clinching its fourth consecutive playoff berth on Sept. 18, including four defeats to the Cardinals.
Yadier Molina started the comeback with an RBI single in the fifth off Adrian Houser. St. Louis loaded the bases with one outs in the seventh on two walks and a single against Jake Cousins, and Tommy Edman hit an RBI grounder off Brad Boxberger, whose throwing error on a pickoff attempt brought in another run. Goldschmidt tied the score with a two-run homer. Nolan Arenada walked against Aaron Ashby (3-1) leading off the eighth and scored on Manny Piña’s passed ball for a 6-5 lead. Molina added a sacrifice fly. Goldsdmidt added his 29th homer in the ninth off Ashby.
T.J. McFarland (4-1) pitched a one-hit seventh, Luis García threw the eighth and Giovanny Gallegos struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 20 chances as four relievers combined for shutout relief. Wainwright, who has won nine of his last 10 decisions, allowed five runs, four hits and two walks in four innings.
Tyrone Taylor hit a grand slam in the first inning and a solo shot in the fourth for the Brewers. Brewers starter Adrian Houser gave up one run on five hits over six innings, while striking out three and issuing two walks. Aaron Ashby (3-1) took the loss. He pitched two innings while giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits while striking out three and walking one.
The Brewers magic number for clinching the NL Central remains at three game.
LHP Eric Lauer (6-5, 3.03 ERA) opens the final regular season home series for the Brewers against RHP Tyler Megill (3-5, 4.57 ERA) and the New York Mets. It’s Lauer’s first outing against the Mets. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Nationals nipped the Reds 3-2 and the Phillies beat the Pirates 12-6.
The Packers (1-1) continue to get ready for Sunday night’s game at San Francisco (2-0) against the 49ers. After a shaky first half, trailing 17-14 to the Lions, the Packers rebounded in the second half and won 35-17. The defense has allowed 52 points in the first two games of the season. Coach Matt LaFleur Thursday said the defense is still a work in progress.
As for the inconsistent play of the defense and special team’s unit, La Fleur was asked if he would step in and make changes in both units. He said they’re working on solving their issues. When asked if he would step in an make changes to the personnel, La Fleur said he would not go over defensive coordinator Joe Berry or special teams coach Maurice Drayton.

In Thursday Night Football Carolina won on the road at Houston 24-9. The Panthers improve to 3-0 while the Texans fall to 1-2.
The Ryder Cup will kick off Friday morning at Whistling Straits with Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas taking on the latest version of the Spanish Armada, Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, in the day’s first foursomes match.
They will be followed by Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa vs. Paul Casey and Viktor Hovland; Brooks Koekpa and Daniel Berger vs. Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick; then Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele vs Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter.
Big-hitting Bryson DeChambeau is not in the lineup. Pairings for the afternoon four-ball will be released mid-morning on Friday.
