Sports for September 17th

After an off-day Thursday the Brewers open a 10-game home-stand with a weekend series against the Cubs at American Family Field. Milwaukee hopes to clinch the NL Central this weekend. Adrian Houser (9-6,3.25 ERA) starts for the Brewers against former Brewer Zach Davies (6-11, 5.40 EDRA). First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.

In the NL Central Thursday the Reds shutout the Pirates 1-0 and the Phillies pounded the Cubs 17-8. The Brewers magic number for clinching the division remains at 5 games and clinching a post-season spot is at 4.  Milwaukee leads the Cardinals by 12 ½ games and the Reds by 13 ½.

Meanwhile Brewers pitcher Brent Suter has been nominated for a high honor for the second consecutive year. He is the Brewers’ nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, which is presented annually to the player who best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions on and off the field. Suter majored in environmental science and public policy while also playing baseball at Harvard, and while the Brewers offered an opportunity to continue pitching after they drafted him in the 31st round in 2012, Environmental causes have remained a passion for Suter off the field. Fans can vote for the 2021 Roberto Clemente Award via mlb.com/clemente21 (English) and LasMayores.com/clemente21 (Spanish), through the end of the regular season on Oct. 3. The winner of the fan vote will count as one vote among those cast by a blue-ribbon panel that will select the league-wide winner of the award.

In the Midwest League Thursday night Great Lakes won at home over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-4. The teams meet again tonight at Great Lakes.

The Packers continue to practice for Monday night’s game at home against the Detroit Lions. Green Bay had its string of six straight opening game victories snapped last Sunday in Jacksonville as the Packers were routed by the New Orleans Saints 35-3.  Quarterback Jameis Winston threw five touchdown passes for the Saints and this week Green Bay will face another talented quarterback in Jared Goff.  Coach Matt LaFleur said the defense has to get after Goff because otherwise he can pick a team apart.  Meanwhile, Former Packer Jamaal Williams makes his return to Lambeau Field.  He spent his first four seasons in Green Bay and LaFleur said he was a great teammate.

The Packers listed seven players on the injured list Thursday. Tight end Josiah Deguara and guard Lucas Patrick did not practice because of concussion protocol and linebacker Za’Darius Smith didn’t practice because of a back injury.  DL Tyler Lancaster (back/ankle), safety Darnell Savage (shoulder) and safety Vernon Scott (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis while C/G Josh Meyers was a full participant.

The pregame starts at 5:00 with the kickoff at 7:15 Monday on FM 102.3, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football a Giants penalty gave Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins a second-chance and he kicked a 43-yard field goal to give Washington a 30-29 victory in a back-and-forth game in Landover, Maryland.
