Sports for September 13th

Jameis Winston and the hurricane-displaced Saints looked right at home in northeast Florida against Green Bay with a 38-3 victory Sunday. Winston passed for five touchdowns, New Orleans intercepted reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers twice, and the Saints kicked off the post-Drew Brees era with a dominant opening victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

The game, originally scheduled for the Superdome, was moved while the New Orleans area continues to clean up wreckage left by Hurricane Ida, which struck southeast Louisiana as a Category 4 storm on Aug. 29, 16 years to the day after Hurricane Katrina devastated the same region. After canceling their final preseason game and practicing two weeks in the Dallas area, the Saints looked as sharp and inspired as any club with such distractions could have hoped. The crowd was announced at 35,242.

Winston, who led the NFL with 30 interceptions in his last season as a starter with Tampa Bay in 2019, was largely judicious and accurate in going 14 of 20 for 148 yards without an interception. The only risky throw that backfired on him — a deflected pass caught by Packers defensive back Darnell Savage in the end zone — was negated by a contested roughing-the-passer penalty called against edge rusher Z’Darius Smith. The penalty set up the second touchdown catch of the game by Juwan Johnson, who came in with four career catches and was converted from receiver to a tight end this offseason. On the day before his 25th birthday, Johnson also converted a screen pass into a 12-yard, first-down gain on fourth-and-7 in the second quarter, when the game was still in doubt. He capped that drive with a leaping catch in the end zone on fourth-and-2. The two fourth-down conversions highlighted a pivotal 14-play drive that consumed 10 minutes. Running back Alvin Kamara led the Saints rushing attack with 83 yards on 20 carries

Aaron Rodgers, who was pulled with nearly 11 minutes left, finished 15 of 28 for 133 yards and no TDs. He led one drive to a field goal at the end of the first half.  Davante Adams caught five passes for 56 yards.  The Packers only managed 43 yards on the ground. Jordan Love was 5-7 for 68 yards.

Packers tight end Josiah Deguara appeared to be knocked unconscious when he took a knee to the head from Saints DE Marcus Davenport while attempting a block on the first series of the third quarter. He left with concussion symptoms.

Green Bay hosts Detroit in a Monday night game on Sept. 20th.

Elsewhere in the NFC North the Bengals beat the Vikings at home in overtime 27-24, the 49ers hung on to beat the Lions in Detroit 41-33 and last night the Rams won at home over the Bears 34-14.

Tonight, Baltimore plays at Las Vegas.

Eric Lauer no-hit Cleveland into the sixth inning a day after Milwaukee threw a history-making no-no, his teammates belted five homers and the Brewers beat the Indians 11-1 on Sunday. Just hours after Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader combined on the record ninth no-hitter in the majors this season — and Cleveland’s record third time being no-hit this year — Lauer threatened to make it two in a row. Lauer, a native of Northeast Ohio, didn’t give up a hit until Ryan Lavarnway singled to center with one out in the sixth. Lavarnway, the Indians’ backup catcher, lined a 1-2 pitch into center field. Óscar Mercado followed with a single and Myles Straw’s single scored Lavarnway. Brewers manager Craig Counsell removed Lauer, who received a nice ovation as he walked to the dugout. Brad Boxberger struck out the next two hitters. Lauer (6-5) allowed one run and three hits while throwing 88 pitches in 5 1/3 innings. Kolten Wong and Avisaíl García each homered twice. Manny Piña also connected, and the Brewers moved closer to the NL Central title with a three-game sweep. Aaron Civale (10-4) allowed seven runs in three innings. The right-hander made his second start since missing six weeks because of a sprained middle finger on his right hand.

Brewers first-baseman Rowdy Tellez (strained right patella) was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday.  He injured his knee running the bases Saturday and underwent an MRI.

Milwaukee opens a three-game series in Detroit on Tuesday after being off Monday. RHP Freddy Peralta (9-4, 2.69 ERA) will start the opener.njured list Sunday.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Nationals beat the Pirates 6-2, the Cardinals shutout the Reds 2-0 and the Giants edged the Cubs 6-5. The magic number for the Brewers to clinch the division is now five games.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers closed out their home season with a 5-4 win over Cedar Rapids.  The Timber Rattlers play at Great Lakes tonight.

Milwaukee ace Corbin Burnes combined with reliever Josh Hader to pitch baseball’s record ninth no-hitter this season, breaking a mark set when pitchers began throwing overhand in 1884 as the Brewers beat the Cleveland Indians 3-0 on Saturday night. Burnes (10-4) struck out 14 with 115 pitches over eight innings, taking a perfect game into the seventh while overpowering the Indians, who were no-hit for the third time in 2021. This time is was by Burnes — who has become a Cy Young contender as the Brewers run away with the NL Central — and Hader, one of the game’s top closers. Cleveland is the first team to be no-hit three times in the same year — all of them with starter Zach Plesac (10-5) on the mound.

Chez Mellusi ran for 144 yards and a touchdown, leading No. 18 Wisconsin to a 37-7 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday night. Wisconsin (1-1, 0-1 Big Ten) piled up 352 rushing yards and also dominated on defense against Eastern Michigan (0-2), which had 92 total yards on offense. The Eagles had three first downs. Mellusi, a Clemson transfer, became the first Wisconsin running back to record consecutive 100-yard rushing games in his first two contests since Corey Clement in 2013. The Badgers, typically known for their explosive running, also had breakout performances from Isaac Guerendo and Jalen Berger. Berger, who missed the opener, had 15 carries for 62 yards and one TD.

Guerendo got to the edge and ran 82 yards for his first career touchdown that increased Wisconsin’s lead to 24-0 with 4:40 left in the first half. Guerendo, a junior, posted the eighth-longest TD run in program history.

The Badgers excelled on defense, even though two veteran starters didn’t play. Safety John Torchio made his second career start in place of senior Collin Wilder, who was out. Alexander Smith was inserted at cornerback due to the absence of fifth-year senior Faion Hicks. But mistakes, like the ones in its 16-10 loss to Penn State last week, were still frustrating for Wisconsin. The Badgers failed to score inside the Eagles’ 10-yard line on their first series. Mellusi tripped on a handoff from Graham Mertz on first down and then the Badgers didn’t score on three runs following that miscue. A holding penalty down field by Wisconsin wide receiver Danny Davis negated a 36-yard TD pass by tight end Clay Cundiff in the first quarter.

The lone highlight for Eastern Michigan was a 98-yard interception return for a TD in the fourth quarter by freshman defensive back David Carter, who picked off Badgers reserve quarterback Chase Wolf. The score was a career first for Carter. Mertz returned in the fourth after Wolf’s interception. Quarterback Graham Mertz completed 14 of 17 passes for 142 yards and no interceptions in three-plus quarters. Badgers receivers saw some action Saturday. Kendric Pryor led receivers with 54 yards, while Davis had 3
