Jonathan India hit a three-run homer, Nick Castellanos also went deep and the Cincinnati Reds beat the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep. Sonny Gray allowed three hits in six scoreless innings for the Reds, who still trail the Brewers by 8 1/2 games. Cincinnati does hold the second NL wild card spot.
Gray (6-6) struck out six while walking only two batters and didn’t give up his first hit until Avisail Garcia’s two-out single in the fourth. In the sixth, he loaded the bases with two outs but got Rowdy Tellez to ground out to first. It was the second consecutive scoreless outing for Gray, who hasn’t allowed a run in his last 13 innings. Brewers starter Brett Anderson (4-8) worked 4 2/3 innings before leaving the game with tightness in his right hip. He was charged with three runs on four hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
A leadoff single and an error by Anderson set the stage for India’s three-run homer off Hunter Strickland in the fifth. The rookie’s 17th homer this season made it 4-0. Castellanos led off the sixth with his 24th. Luis Urias led off the seventh with his 17th homer for Milwaukee.
Manager Craig Counsell said shortstop Willy Adames (left quad) could return to action Friday when the Brewers open a three-game series at Minnesota. The Brewers send LHP Eric Lauer (4-4, 3.59) to the mound on Friday against the Twins against fellow-lefty Andrew Albers (0-0, 2.25 ERA. First pitch is at 7:10 and the game can be heard on AM 1100/98.3 FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday the Pirates beat the Cardinals 11-7. The Cubs were idle. The Brewers lead the Reds by 8 ½ games in the division.
Thursday was the final practice of Packers training camp ahead of the third and final preseason game, which will take place Saturday in Buffalo. After that, full attention shifts to the Packers opener in New Orleans against the Saints. The last practice of camp put Aaron Rodgers’ talent on full display, with a few plays resulting in animated celebrations with offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett.
“We’ve been working on some different concepts to kind of work on the next two weeks, as some of the guys are doing Buffalo stuff we’re looking ahead to New Orleans and the regular season,” Rodgers said. “It’s fun when things come together like that in the QB room and you can execute them on the field.”
After missing organized team activities and minicamp, Rodgers has shown no signs of rust throughout training camp.
“I think it’s been a good camp, definitely been a good camp. I’ve felt good from the beginning,” he said.
He said his accuracy stems from continuous work on his legs. Rodgers also gave credit to the guys he’s throwing to. Rodgers is also looking for center Josh Myers to be more consistent. While he’s had plenty of praise for the rookie, Rodgers had a few words with Myers at practice Thursday following a situation where Myers did not snap the ball on time. Rodgers explained it as frustration. The competition at guard along with some other key position battles will be the center of attention Saturday, as the Packers take on the Bills.
Coach Matt LaFleur talks about the status of quarterback Jordan Love who was injured in the first pre-season game against the Texans and was held out of last week’s game against the Jets. The third-year head coach said Love feels good and LaFleur will make the determination as to whether or not he’ll start against Buffalo. He said third-string quarterback Kurt Benkert will also see action. Meanwhile, running back Aaron Jones says the team will be ready for the season.
